A portable item reporting device (PIRD) for local assessment of displaced or anomalous statuses of a consumer or commercial portable item tagged by the PIRD, the PIRD comprising:
- (A) a non-volatile data storage configured to store a plurality of usage expectations, each usage expectation of the plurality pertaining to both of (i) the tagged portable item and (ii) daily life activities of a user of the tagged portable item;
- (B) a hardware processor configured to:
- (i) receive different types of ambient environmental data from a plurality of environmental sensors, and (ii) locally identify a plurality of different displaced/anomalous item states for the tagged portable item, as also distinguished from an extant/normal state, based on a comparison of environmental sensor data with an applicable usage expectation for a current environmental context;
- (C) a dynamic random access memory (DRAM);
- (D) at least one of an interface element configured to provide local presentation of a portable item status assessment and a communications element configured to provide for wireless broadcast of the portable item status assessment;
- (E) a plurality of respective environmental sensor communicatively coupled with the processor, each configured to measure an ambient environment of the tagged portable item with respect to a plurality of different respective types of environmental phenomena;
- (F) a timer element configured to provide date and time determinations;
- and
- (G) a structural element for integrating elements (A), (B), (C), (D), (E), and (F)(G) into an integrated hardware dongle which is configured to tag only one portable item at time to maintain sustained, portable-item specific co-location of the PIRD and the one tagged portable item during daily life use of the portable item by the user;
- wherein:
- the PIRD dongle is configured for local monitoring, environmental assessment, and state assessment for any and all consumer or commercial portable item which are:
- (i) suitable for either or both of hand-carting or pocket transport in the routine course of daily life activities;
- and (ii) suitable for being physically tagged by the dongle without interference by the dongle in the conventional daily life activity uses of the portable item;
- the PIRD is configured to be dynamically adaptable by and for different users to store usage expectations which are uniquely defined for different users with respect to any and of all of:
- (i) a plurality of distinctive consumer or commercial portable items as a particular user may employ in daily life activities;
- and
- (ii) a plurality of different and distinctive environmental contexts for the daily life activities of the particular user;
- the PIRD is configured to be adaptable for identifying and distinguishing different, distinct displaced/anomalous states, each different displaced/anomalous state being identified and distinguished in real-time by the PIRD according to an analysis of ambient environmental data from one or more of the plurality of environmental sensors, and further configured for providing a notification of a detected displace/anomalous state;
- and the non-volatile storage comprises firmware, the firmware comprising computer code for directing the processor to define a usage expectation by at least one of:
- (a) presenting a user interface suitable for enabling the user to define a new personal usage expectation or edit an existing personal usage expectation for the tagged portable item with parameters defining personal usage and environmental phenomena in terms familiar to non-technical users, and adapting via the hardware processor the user-defined usage expectation into formal mathematical or logical forms indicative of expected data obtained from the environmental sensors;
- (b) monitoring daily life usage of the tagged portable item by the user during a learning interval to automatically characterize one or more appropriate usage expectations;
- and
- (c) a combination of (a) and (b).
