Abstract
Provided herein are phenazine degrading agents, methods and systems for interfering with viability of bacteria and related antimicrobial and compositions.
Claims11
A method to interfere with viability of bacteria producing pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III), the method comprising
- contacting the bacteria producing pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III) with an effective amount of one or more phenazine degrading agents comprising a pyocyanin demethylase and/or a derivative thereof, alone or in combination with an antibiotic and/or other antimicrobial for a time and under conditions to reduce survivability and/or antibiotic resistance of the bacteria,
- wherein formula (III) is
- where R1-R7 are independently selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, R10 is a methyl group, R9 is hydrogen and R8 is a negatively charged substituent, and
- wherein the derivative has the ability to demethylate the pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III).
A method for inhibiting bacteria biofilm formation and/or disrupting mature biofilm in a medium, the biofilm comprising bacteria producing pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III), the method comprising:
- contacting the bacteria biofilm with an effective amount of one or more phenazine degrading agents comprising a pyocyanin demethylase and/or a derivative thereof, alone or in combination with an antibiotic and/or other antimicrobial for a time and under conditions thus reducing survivability and/or antibiotic resistance of the bacteria biofilm,
- wherein formula (III) is
- where R1-R7 are independently selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, R10 is a methyl group, R9 is hydrogen and R8 is a negatively charged substituent, and
- wherein the derivative has the ability to demethylate the pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III).
A method for inhibiting bacteria biofilm formation and/or disrupting mature biofilm in a medium, the biofilm comprising bacteria producing pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III), the method comprising:
- administering to the medium comprising the bacteria biofilm an effective amount of 1-hydroxyphenazine alone or in combination with an effective amount of one or more phenazine degrading agents comprising a pyocyanin demethylase and/or a derivative thereof, an antibiotic and/or other antimicrobial for a time and under conditions thus reducing survivability and/or antibiotic resistance of the bacteria biofilm,
- wherein formula (III) is
- where R1-R7 are independently selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, R10 is a methyl group, R9 is hydrogen and R8 is a negatively charged substituent, and
- wherein the derivative has the ability to demethylate the pyocyanin-like phenazines of formula (III).
