Abstract
A terminal for measuring at least one dimension of an object includes a range camera, a visible camera, and a display that are fixed in position and orientation relative to each other. The range camera is configured to produce a range image of an area in which the object is located. The visible camera is configured to produce a visible image of an area in which the object is located. The display is configured to present information associated with the range camera's field of view and the visible camera's field of view.

An object analysis system, comprising:
- a camera system comprising a field of view;
- a laser projection device configured to project a laser pattern aligned to the field of view of the camera system, the laser pattern comprising:
- a first linear subpattern traversing a first visible face and a second linear subpattern traversing a second visible face of an object,
- wherein the first visible face and the second visible face are on different sides of a first edge connecting the first visible face of the object and the second visible face of the object,
- wherein the first linear subpattern and the second linear subpattern are parallel to the first edge of the object;
- and
- wherein the laser pattern comprises a constant sized rectangle formed by laser lines in the laser pattern, wherein the laser pattern is formed by two horizontal parallel lines and two vertical parallel lines with constant distance between the parallel lines;
- wherein the camera system is configured to capture an image of the projected laser pattern on the object within the field of view of the camera system;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- calculate coordinates in three-dimensional space of a first break point in the projected laser pattern at a second edge of the object and a second break point in the projected laser pattern at a third edge of the object;
- and
- calculate coordinates in three-dimensional space of a third break point in the projected laser pattern at a fourth edge of the object and a fourth break point in the projected laser pattern at a fifth edge of the object,
- wherein a dimension between the first break point and second break point represents a dimension of the object in a first plane and a dimension between the third break point and the fourth break point represents a dimension of the object in a second plane.
A method for object analysis, the method comprising:
- projecting, by a laser projection device, a laser pattern aligned to a field of view of a camera system, the laser pattern comprising:
- a first linear subpattern traversing a first visible face and a second linear subpattern traversing a second visible face of an object,
- wherein the first visible face and the second visible face are on different sides of a first edge connecting the first visible face of the object and the second visible face of the object,
- wherein the first linear subpattern and the second linear subpattern are parallel to the first edge of the object;
- and
- wherein the laser pattern comprises a constant sized rectangle formed by laser lines in the laser pattern, wherein the laser pattern is formed by two horizontal parallel lines and two vertical parallel lines with constant distance between the parallel lines;
- capturing by the camera system, an image of the projected laser pattern on the object within the field of view of the camera system;
- computing, by a processor, coordinates in three-dimensional space of a first break point in the projected laser pattern at a second edge of the object and a second break point in the projected laser pattern at a third edge of the object;
- and
- computing, by the processor, coordinates in three-dimensional space of a third break point in the projected laser pattern at a fourth edge of the object and a fourth break point in the projected laser pattern at a fifth edge of the object,
- wherein a dimension between the first break point and second break point represents a dimension of the object in a first plane and a dimension between the third break point and the fourth break point represents a dimension of the object in a second plane.
