Abstract
A surgical cutting tool includes an elongated shaft and a cutting head. The shaft defines a coupling portion terminating at a proximal end of the shaft, a stem portion, and a distal portion. The stem portion defines a central axis. The coupling portion optionally defines a deflection surface positioned oblique with respect to the central axis and connected with a first driven surface and a second driven surface. Upon insertion into a drive chuck, the deflection surface promotes self-alignment of the cutting tool and the drive chuck.
Claims15
A surgical tool for use in the dissection of bone, biomaterials, and/or other tissue when mated with a motor, the surgical tool comprising:
- an elongated shaft defining opposing, first and second ends, a dissection portion adjacent the first end, a coupling portion adjacent the second end, and an intermediate portion between the dissection and coupling portions, the intermediate portion defining a central axis of the shaft;
- wherein the coupling portion includes exactly two interface structures, each interface structure positioned on opposite sides of the central axis and extending from a leading position adjacent the second end to a trailing position spaced apart from the leading position in a direction of the first end, wherein each interface structure includes:
- a first driven surface bound by a first lateral edge, a first outer longitudinal edge and an inner longitudinal edge;
- and
- a second driven surface bound by a second lateral edge, a second outer longitudinal edge and the inner longitudinal edge;
- wherein the first and second lateral edges extend from the inner longitudinal edge to the first and second outer longitudinal edges, respectively;
- and further wherein in a plane perpendicular to the central axis, a linear length of the first lateral edge is greater than a linear length of the second lateral edge;
- and further wherein in the plane perpendicular to the central axis, a perimeter of the coupling portion is continuously curved in extension from the first outer longitudinal edge of a first one of the exactly two interface structures to the second outer longitudinal edge of a second one of the exactly two interface structures.
