Abstract
The present disclosure generally pertains to devices and methods for determining propellant mass based on average measurements irrespective of the fluid orientation in a fuel tank. The device is useful in detecting fuel levels in tanks where the fuel is in motion, for instance in aircraft (i.e., undergoing varying acceleration maneuvers) or spacecraft (i.e., a microgravity environment). The devices and methods can also be used for determining the liquid in a surface tension screen liquid acquisition device (LAD), and particularly, the incipient breakdown as gas bubbles enter or are formed inside the LAD as the screen dries or heat transfer induces vaporization. The same basic electrode configuration can be used to stir the liquid to reduce thermal stratification and condense vapor bubbles.
Claims9
A method, comprising:
- depositing a liquid propellant into a tank, wherein the tank contains a liquid acquisition device (LAD), disposed within the tank, that defines an outlet of the tank, and wherein an electrode is positioned within the LAD, the electrode being electrically connected to a voltage source;
- measuring a capacitance between the electrode and a conductive component of the LAD;
- determining an amount of the liquid propellant within the LAD based on the measuring;
- detecting a vapor bubble in the LAD based on the measuring;
- and
- in response to the detecting, applying a voltage to the electrode for agitating the liquid propellant within the LAD, thereby collapsing the vapor bubble.
A method, comprising:
- depositing a liquid propellant into a tank, wherein the tank contains a liquid acquisition device (LAD), disposed within the tank, that defines an outlet of the tank, and wherein an electrode is positioned within the LAD, the electrode being electrically connected to a voltage source;
- measuring a capacitance between the electrode and a conductive component of the LAD;
- determining an amount of the liquid propellant within the LAD based on the measuring;
- and
- applying current from an alternating current (AC) power source to the electrode, thereby causing the electrode and the conductive component to generate an electric field, wherein the electric field is sufficiently strong to generate dielectrophoretic forces that cause molecules of the liquid propellant to move into the LAD.
An apparatus comprising:
- a tank containing a liquid propellant;
- a liquid acquisition device (LAD) disposed within the tank, the LAD defining an outlet port;
- an electrode disposed within the LAD, the electrode being electrically connected to a first power source configured to provide a voltage to the electrode,
- a circuit configured to measure a capacitance between the electrode and a conductive component of the LAD;
- and
- at least one processor configured to determine an amount of the liquid propellant with the LAD based on the measured capacitance, wherein the at least one processor is configured to detect a vapor bubble in the LAD based on the measured capacitance and wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause a sufficiently high voltage to be applied to the electrode from the first power source such that the liquid propellant within the LAD is sufficiently agitated to collapse the vapor bubble.
An apparatus comprising:
- a tank containing a liquid propellant;
- a liquid acquisition device (LAD) disposed within the tank, the LAD defining an outlet port;
- an electrode disposed within the LAD, the electrode being electrically connected to a first power source configured to provide a voltage to the electrode;
- a circuit configured to measure a capacitance between the electrode and a conductive component of the LAD;
- at least one processor configured to determine an amount of the liquid propellant with the LAD based on the measured capacitance;
- and
- an alternating current (AC) power source, wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause a current from the AC power source to be applied to the electrode, and wherein the current is sufficiently high to generate dielectrophoretic forces for moving molecules of the liquid propellant into the LAD.
