Abstract
Disclosed are techniques for implementing packet checkers and packet generators within a network device. The packet checkers and packet generators can each operate in an internal mode to test functionality of the network device or in an external mode to test functionality of an external device.
Claims20
An apparatus, comprising:
- an ingress port;
- an egress port;
- and
- an integrated circuit coupled with the ingress port and the egress port, the integrated circuit comprising a packet processor, a first packet checker coupled between the packet processor and the ingress port, and a second packet checker coupled between the packet processor and the egress port,
- wherein the first packet checker, when operating in an external mode, is configured to:
- receive a first data packet via the ingress port;
- determine, based on information from the first data packet, whether the first data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- perform a first action based on whether the first data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- wherein the second packet checker, when operating in an internal mode, is configured to:
- receive a second data packet generated internally within the integrated circuit and routed by the packet processor to the egress port;
- determine, based on information from the second data packet, whether the second data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- perform a second action based on whether the second data packet is a test type of data packet.

A method of operating an integrated circuit, the integrated circuit comprising a packet processor, a first packet checker coupled between the packet processor and an ingress port, and a second packet checker coupled between the packet processor and an egress port, the method comprising:
- operating the first packet checker in an external mode, comprising:
- receiving a first data packet via the ingress port;
- determining, based on information from the first data packet, whether the first data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- performing a first action based on whether the first data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- operating the second packet checker in an internal mode, comprising:
- receiving a second data packet generated internally within the integrated circuit and routed by the packet processor to the egress port;
- determining, based on information from the second data packet, whether the second data packet is a test type of data packet;
- and
- performing a second action based on whether the second data packet is a test type of data packet.
