Abstract
Aspects of the disclosure relate to mechanisms for interworking between legacy and next generation radio access technologies (RATs) in a communication network. In some examples, a connectivity request originated by a user equipment towards a next generation core network may be processed by the next generation core network. The next generation core network may then provide the user equipment an indication of whether the next generation core network supports an inter-RAT handover between the next generation RAT and a legacy RAT.

A method for interworking between radio access technologies in a communication network, comprising:
- receiving a connectivity request from a user equipment at a first core network via a wireless access network utilizing a first radio access technology (RAT), the first RAT providing connectivity to one or more data networks based on at least one or more corresponding Data Network Session (DNS) connections, each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections including a single DNS and one or more data flows, and each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections connects to a data network of the one or more data networks;
- processing the connectivity request at the first core network;
- and
- establishing a DNS connection of the one or more DNS connections between the user equipment and a data network of the one or more data networks over the wireless access network via two or more user plane gateways (UP-GWs) in the first core network, each of the two or more UP-GWs serving a different data flow of the one or more data flows of the DNS connection, and wherein one or more of the two or more UP-GWs provides data connection address allocation and policy control for the user equipment.
A core network serving node within a first core network, comprising:
- an interface communicatively coupled to a wireless access network via the first core network, the wireless access network utilizing a first radio access technology (RAT);
- a memory;
- and
- a processor communicatively coupled to the interface and the memory, the processor configured to:
- receive a connectivity request from a user equipment via the wireless access network utilizing the first RAT, the first RAT providing connectivity to one or more data networks based on at least one or more corresponding Data Network Session (DNS) connections, each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections including a single DNS and one or more data flows, and each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections connects to a data network of the one or more data networks;
- process the connectivity request;
- and
- establish a DNS connection of the one or more DNS connections between the user equipment and a data network of the one or more data networks over the wireless access network via two or more user plane gateways (UP-GWs) in the first core network, each of the two or more UP-GWs serving a different data flow of the one or more data flows of the DNS connection, and wherein one or more of the two or more UP-GWs provides data connection address allocation and policy control for the user equipment.
A core network serving node apparatus in a communication network, comprising:
- means for receiving a connectivity request from a user equipment at a first core network via a wireless access network utilizing a first radio access technology (RAT), the first RAT providing connectivity to one or more data networks based on at least one or more corresponding Data Network Session (DNS) connections, each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections including a single DNS and one or more data flows, and each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections connects to a data network of the one or more data networks;
- means for processing the connectivity request at the first core network;
- and
- means for establishing a DNS connection of the one or more DNS connections between the user equipment and a data network of the one or more data networks over the wireless access network via two or more user plane gateways (UP-GWs) in the first core network, each of the two or more UP-GWs serving a different data flow of the one or more data flows of the DNS connection, and wherein one or more of the two or more UP-GWs provides data connection address allocation and policy control for the user equipment.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer executable code, comprising code for:
- receiving a connectivity request from a user equipment at a first core network via a wireless access network utilizing a first radio access technology (RAT), the first RAT providing connectivity to one or more data networks based on at least one or more corresponding Data Network Session (DNS) connections, each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections including a single DNS and one or more data flows, and each DNS connection of the at least one or more corresponding DNS connections connects to a data network of the one or more data networks;
- processing the connectivity request at the first core network;
- and
- establishing a DNS connection of the one or more DNS connections between the user equipment and a data network of the one or more data networks over the wireless access network via two or more user plane gateways (UP-GWs) in the first core network, each of the two or more UP-GWs serving a different data flow of the one or more data flows of the DNS connection, and wherein one or more of the two or more UP-GWs provides data connection address allocation and policy control for the user equipment.
