Operating system supporting cost aware applications

At least one computer-readable storage medium comprising at least one of a memory, disk, or disc having computer-executable instructions stored therein, that, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform actions, the actions comprising:

• generating, by a first software component that is executing on a first computing device, data for transmission to a remote computing device, wherein the first software component is associated with a first entity that corresponds to a first data transmission policy;
• associating the generated data with a first identifier of the first entity;
• selecting a network for transmission of the generated data based on the first data transmission policy, a charging policy for the selected network, and a quantity of the generated data;
• sending the generated data to a network stack;
• identifying prior network data usage associated with the first entity based on the first identifier;
• and
• selectively handling the generated data based upon a comparison of the first data transmission policy with at least the prior network data usage.

A computing device, comprising:

• a memory and a processor, wherein the memory and the processor are respectively configured to store and execute instructions, including instructions for causing the computing device to perform operations, the operations comprising:
• generating, by a first software component that is executing on a first computing device, data for transmission to a remote computing device, wherein the first software component is associated with a first entity that corresponds to a first data transmission policy;
• associating the generated data with a first identifier of the first entity;
• selecting a network for transmission of the generated data based on the first data transmission policy, a charging policy for the selected network, and a quantity of the generated data;
• sending the generated data to a network stack;
• identifying prior network data usage associated with the first entity based on the first identifier;
• and
• selectively handling the generated data based upon a comparison of the first data transmission policy with at least the prior network data usage.
