Abstract
Systems and methods to manage database data are provided. A particular method includes automatically identifying a plurality of storage devices. The storage devices include a first device of a first type and a second device of a second type. The first type includes a solid state memory device. The method may further identify a high priority data set of the database. A rebalancing operation is conducted that includes moving the high priority data set to the solid state memory device and substantially evening distribution of other data of the database among the storage devices.
Claims20
A computer program product comprising a computer readable storage device storing computer readable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising program code executable by a computer to:
- determine that available storage in a database system has changed;
- and
- in response to a determination that the available storage in the database system has changed:
- perform a first operation that moves high priority data items to a solid state memory of the available storage, wherein each high priority data item of the high priority data items includes data and a high priority data tag;
- perform a second operation that evenly distributes low priority data items among solid state memories of the available storage and hard disk memories of the available storage, wherein each low priority data item of the low priority data items includes data and a low priority data tag;
- and
- wherein, in response to the first and second operations being performed, the solid state memory has a greater amount of data than a hard disk memory of the hard disk memories of the available storage, and wherein the solid state memory includes high priority data items and at least one low priority data item of a plurality of low priority data items, and wherein the hard disk memory includes at least one other low priority data item of the plurality of low priority data items.
A method of using a processor to manage a database system, the method comprising:
- detecting, by the processor, a change in available storage in a database system;
- and
- in response to the detection, executing a first balancing operation that includes:
- causing, by the processor, a first operation to be performed to move high priority data items to a solid state memory of the available storage, the high priority data items including frequently-accessed data or boot data;
- and
- causing, by the processor, a second operation to be performed to evenly distribute low priority data items among solid state memories of the available storage and hard disk memories of the available storage,
- wherein, in response to the first operation being performed and in response to the second operation being performed, the solid state memory has a greater amount of data than a hard disk memory of the hard disk memories, wherein the solid state memory includes high priority data items and at least one low priority data item of a plurality of low priority data items, and wherein the hard disk memory includes at least one other low priority data item of the plurality of low priority data items.
A computing system for managing a database system, the computing system comprising:
- at least one memory device for storing program code;
- and
- at least one processor for executing the program code to:
- detect one or more rebalancing triggers to initiate a rebalancing operation,
- wherein the rebalancing operation includes a first operation and a second operation;
- in response to a detection of one of the one or more rebalancing triggers:
- perform the first operation that moves high priority data items to a solid state memory of the available storage, the high priority data items including frequently-accessed data, boot data, or both;
- and
- perform the second operation that evenly distributes low priority data items among solid state memories of the available storage and hard disk memories of the available storage
