Segmented light or optical power emitting device with fully converting wavelength converting material and methods of operation

An illumination device comprising:

• a first light emitting structure comprising:
• a first die comprising a first plurality of individually addressable segments separated by a first plurality of trenches, each of the first plurality of individually addressable segments comprising a first semiconductor structure configured to emit first radiation;
• and
• a first wavelength converting layer coupled with the first die, the first wavelength converting layer having a binder material containing a phosphor, a density of the phosphor limiting a ratio of energy of the first radiation exiting the first wavelength converting layer unconverted to energy of the first radiation impinging on the first wavelength converting layer to be less than 10%;
• a second light emitting structure comprising a second die comprising a second plurality of individually addressable segments separated by a second plurality of trenches, each of the second plurality of individually addressable segments comprising a second semiconductor structure configured to emit second radiation;
• and
• a first scattering layer disposed over at least one of the first and second wavelength converting layer, the first scattering layer partially segmented by scattering layer separations, the scattering layer separations formed in a surface of the first scattering layer opposing a surface of the first scattering layer facing the at least one of the first and second wavelength converting layer and do not fully cut through the first scattering layer, and the scattering layer separations formed between neighboring segments of the at least one of the first and second plurality of individually addressable segments.

An illumination device comprising:

• first and second independent light emitting structures configured to emit different wavelengths, each of the first and second light emitting structures comprising:
• a plurality of individually addressable segments separated by a plurality of trenches and configured to emit radiation of a particular wavelength;
• a wavelength converting layer over associated segments, the wavelength converting layer having a binder material containing a phosphor, a density of the phosphor limiting a ratio of energy of the radiation exiting the wavelength converting layer unconverted to energy of the radiation impinging on the wavelength converting layer to be less than 10%;
• and
• a scattering layer disposed over the wavelength converting layer, the scattering layer comprising scattering layer separations formed in a surface of the scattering layer that do not fully cut through the scattering layer, the scattering layer separations being substantially vertically aligned with the trenches such that the separations are disposed between the segments.
