Abstract
The number of pulses of a stimulus signal provided by a conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”) between launch and establishing an electrical circuit with a human or animal target may be counted to determine the distance between the CEW and the target and the distance between electrodes launched by the CEW toward the target while positioned in or near target tissue.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- launching, by a conducted electrical weapon, an electrode toward a target, wherein the electrode is configured to provide a stimulus signal to the target to impede locomotion of the target;
- measuring, by the conducted electrical weapon, a time of flight of the electrode between the conducted electrical weapon and the target;
- and
- calculating, by the conducted electrical weapon, a distance between the conducted electrical weapon and the target based on a known velocity of deployment and the time of flight.

A conducted electrical weapon comprising:
- a handle comprising:
- a processing circuit;
- and
- a signal generator configured to provide a stimulus signal;
- and
- a deployment unit removably inserted within a bay of the handle, wherein the deployment unit comprises a plurality of electrodes configured to be deployed from the deployment unit, and wherein the processing circuit is configured to perform operations comprising:
- launching a first electrode from the plurality of electrodes toward a target,
- providing the stimulus signal to the first electrode at a first pulse rate, and
- determining a distance between the conducted electrical weapon and the target based on the first pulse rate of the stimulus signal.

A method comprising:
- deploying, by a conducted electrical weapon, a plurality of electrodes towards a target;
- measuring, by the conducted electrical weapon, a time of flight of the plurality of electrodes between the conducted electrical weapon and the target;
- calculating, by the conducted electrical weapon, a deployment distance between the conducted electrical weapon and the target based on the time of flight and a velocity of deployment of the plurality of electrodes;
- and
- calculating, by the conducted electrical weapon, a spread distance between a first electrode and a second electrode from the plurality of electrodes, wherein the spread distance is based on the deployment distance and an angle of deployment of at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode.
