Measuring utilization of resources in datacenters

A system for measuring component utilization in a computing system, the system comprising:

• at least one processor device, wherein the at least one processor device:
• obtains a server energy utilization reading of a statistical significant number of servers out of a total number of servers located in the datacenter by measuring, at predetermined intervals, a collective energy consumed by all processing components within each server;
• measures the collective energy by virtually probing thereby monitoring an energy consumption of individual ones of all the processing components to each collect an individual energy utilization reading;
• wherein the individual energy utilization reading is aggregated over a predetermined time period to collect an energy consumption pattern associated with the server utilization reading, and wherein the energy consumption pattern comprises observed energy consumption values of a maximum consumption, a minimum consumption, and an average consumption between the maximum consumption and the minimum consumption of the server utilization reading;
• allocates a new virtual probe by running a power virus on previously allocated ones of a plurality of virtual probes to generate for each an energy consumption key, the energy consumption key used to form a peak and valley chain of detectible energy changes to compare against the energy consumption key of a candidate virtual probe;
• when the energy consumption key of the candidate virtual probe matches the energy consumption key of a previously allocated one of the plurality of virtual probes, releases the candidate virtual probe and creating a waiting time before allocating an alternative candidate virtual probe;
• and
• attempts to allocate the new virtual probe until the server energy utilization reading of the statistical significant number of servers is reached.

A computer program product for measuring component utilization in a computing system, by a processor device, the computer program product embodied on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-readable program code portions stored therein, the computer-readable program code portions comprising:

• an executable portion that obtains a server energy utilization reading of a statistical significant number of servers out of a total number of servers located in the datacenter by measuring, at predetermined intervals, a collective energy consumed by all processing components within each server;
• an executable portion that measures the collective energy by virtually probing thereby monitoring an energy consumption of individual ones of all the processing components to each collect an individual energy utilization reading;
• wherein the individual energy utilization reading is aggregated over a predetermined time period to collect an energy consumption pattern associated with the server utilization reading, and wherein the energy consumption pattern comprises observed energy consumption values of a maximum consumption, a minimum consumption, and an average consumption between the maximum consumption and the minimum consumption of the server utilization reading;
• an executable portion that allocates a new virtual probe by running a power virus on previously allocated ones of a plurality of virtual probes to generate for each an energy consumption key, the energy consumption key used to form a peak and valley chain of detectible energy changes to compare against the energy consumption key of a candidate virtual probe;
• an executable portion that, when the energy consumption key of the candidate virtual probe matches the energy consumption key of a previously allocated one of the plurality of virtual probes, releases the candidate virtual probe and creating a waiting time before allocating an alternative candidate virtual probe;
• and
• an executable portion that attempts to allocate the new virtual probe until the server energy utilization reading of the statistical significant number of servers is reached.
