Abstract
Three-dimensional display systems may include polarized displays that polarize light emitted from a first set of areas of the display with a first polarization for a first eye of the viewer and that polarizes light emitted from a second set of areas of the display with a second polarization for a second eye of the viewer. This may result in dark areas being perceived by a viewer when viewed through polarized 3D glasses. Systems and technologies according to this disclosure may include 3D glasses that have a lenses configured to redirect a portion of incoming light in a first axis to at least partially illuminate the dark areas.
Claims17
Three-dimensional (3D) glasses comprising:
- a first lens comprising a refractive prism structure that comprises:
- a first face having a first edge and a second edge, wherein the first face:
- allows a first portion of light having a first polarization to pass through the first lens, wherein the light having the first polarization is emitted from a first area of a display and intersects the first face in a first direction;
- and
- filters out light having a second polarization, wherein the light having the second polarization is emitted from a second area of the display;
- a second face extending from the first edge of the first face and defining a first angle with the first face, wherein the second face refracts a second portion of the light having the first polarization in a second direction;
- and
- a third face extending from the second edge of the first face and defining a second angle with the first face, wherein the third face refracts a third portion of the light having the first polarization in a third direction different than the second direction;
- and
- a second lens that:
- allows the light having the second polarization to pass through the second lens;
- and
- filters out the light having the first polarization.
A viewing apparatus comprising:
- a first lens comprising a refractive prism structure comprising:
- a first face having a first edge and a second edge, wherein the first face allows a first portion of light having a first polarization intersecting the first lens in a first direction to pass through the first lens and filters out light having a second polarization intersecting the first lens;
- a second face extending from the first edge of the first face and defining a first angle with the first face, wherein the second face refracts a second portion of the light having the first polarization in a second direction different than the first direction;
- and
- a third face extending from the second edge of the first face and defining a second angle with the first face, wherein the third face refracts a third portion of the light having the first polarization in a third direction different than the second direction;
- and
- a second lens that:
- allows light having the second polarization to pass through the second lens;
- and
- filters out light having the first polarization intersecting the second lens.
Glasses comprising:
- a first lens comprising a refractive prism structure that includes:
- a first face having a first edge and a second edge, wherein the first face:
- allows a first portion of light having a first polarization to pass through the first lens, wherein the light having the first polarization is emitted from a first direction;
- filters out light having a second polarization, wherein the light having the second polarization is emitted from a second direction;
- a second face extending from the first edge of the first face and defining a first angle with the first face, wherein the second face refracts a second portion of the light having the first polarization in a second direction different than the first direction;
- and
- a third face extending from the second edge of the first face and defining a second angle with the first face, wherein the third face refracts a third portion of the light having the first polarization in a third direction different than the second direction;
- and
- a second lens to:
- allow the light having the second polarization to pass through the second lens;
- and
- filter out the light having the first polarization.
