Abstract
A composition and methods of use and preparation are provided. The composition may comprise a magnetic nanoparticle comprising: a passivation layer; and at least one unique entity that is attached to the magnetic nanoparticle. For example, the composition may include a magnetic nanoparticle and an antibody attached to the magnetic nanoparticle. Such magnetic nanoparticle architecture can provide treatment by, and screening of, nanoparticles functionalized with various functional species.
Claims8
A method of making a functionalized magnetic nanoparticle comprising:
- a. providing a carboxylated magnetic nanoparticle;
- b. reacting the carboxylated magnetic nanoparticle with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide and sulfonated N-hydroxysuccinimide to provide N-hydroxysuccinimide coated magnetic nanoparticles;
- and
- c. covalently attaching poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to the N-hydroxysuccinimide coated magnetic nanoparticles in a surface activating solution under conditions that provide a PEG density of at least about 50 picomoles/cm2,
- wherein the surface activating solution comprises an organic solvent, and
- wherein the organic solvent comprises at least 50% methanol.
