Abstract
Implants and methods for augmentation of the disc space between two vertebral bodies to treat disease or abnormal pathology conditions in spinal applications. The implant includes a chain of biocompatible material suitable for insertion into a disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies in a patient's spinal column, wherein the spinal disc space has a transverse plane. The chain comprises a plurality of adjacent bodies having a height configured to reside within the disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies and a length configured to reside in the disc space between two adjacent vertebral bodies when the chain is curved in an orientation substantially along the transverse plane of the spinal disc space.
Claims16
A spinal fusion method, comprising:
- accessing a disc space located between two adjacent vertebral bodies in a patient's spinal column, wherein the disc space has a transverse plane;
- introducing a cannula into the disc space;
- inserting a curved guide through the cannula such that the curved guide extends distally out of the cannula into the disc space;
- and
- inserting a chain of biocompatible material through the cannula into the disc space along the curved guide to distract the disc space, the chain of biocompatible material comprising a plurality of adjacent bodies and having a height and a length configured to reside within the disc space,
- wherein the guide curves along its length only along the transverse plane of the disc space to position the plurality of adjacent bodies into a curved orientation that allows the chain to reside within the disc space,
- wherein the guide encircles no portion of the chain during insertion, and
- wherein the guide is inserted outside of an outer surface of the chain.
A spinal fusion method, comprising:
- accessing a disc space located between two vertebral bodies in a patient's spinal column, wherein the space has a transverse plane;
- inserting a curved portion of a guide into the disc space along the transverse plane;
- distracting the disc space by inserting a chain of biocompatible material comprising a plurality of linked bodies along the guide, the guide being effective to guide the chain in a desired direction, the curved portion of the guide being external to the plurality of linked bodies after insertion while the guide is disposed within the disc space;
- and
- positioning the chain such that the chain curves in the transverse plane and such that a distal terminal end of the chain is adjacent to a proximal end portion of the chain,
- wherein the guide encircles no portion of the chain during insertion, and
- wherein the chain encircles no portion of the guide.
A method, comprising:
- accessing a disc space located between two adjacent vertebral bodies in a patient's spinal column, wherein the disc space has a transverse plane;
- inserting a curved guide into the disc space along the transverse plane;
- and
- distracting the disc space by inserting, along the curved guide, a flexible elongated member comprising a plurality of adjacent bodies, the flexible elongated member having a length configured to reside in the disc space between the two adjacent vertebral bodies,
- wherein the guide curves along its length only along the transverse plane of the disc space such that it conforms to the circumference of the disc space,
- wherein the plurality of adjacent bodies are interconnected by flexible joints such that during insertion along the curved guide, the adjacent bodies angulate with respect to each other into a curved orientation,
- wherein the guide encircles no portion of the member during insertion, and
- wherein a first surface of the guide contacts an outer surface of the member during insertion and is disposed between the outer surface of the member and a second surface of the guide.
