Abstract
A system for use in performing ocular examinations, such as convergence and accommodation useful in diagnosing traumatic brain injury (including concussion), includes an assessment device. The assessment device includes a portable carrier having a visual target and a distance measurement component. The system may further include a communications channel and a companion device. The distance measurement component communicates via the communication channel with the companion device. The companion device stores one or more distances measured by the distance measurement component.
Claims16
A method for performing an ocular assessment on a subject with a portable assessment device, the assessment device comprising a visual display configured to display a visual target, a distance measurement component configured to measure distance between the subject and the assessment device, and a trigger configured to receive a user input, wherein the method comprises:
- measuring a first distance between the subject and the assessment device with the distance measurement component while the visual display is viewable by the subject;
- acquiring a plurality of distance measurements with the distance measurement component while the distance between the subject and the assessment device is decreased from the first distance, wherein the visual display displays the visual target during the acquisition of the plurality of distance measurements;
- upon receiving a user input signal from the trigger, measuring a final distance between the subject and the assessment device with the distance measurement component, wherein reception of the user input signal is associated with the occurrence of a predetermined ocular assessment event;
- evaluating the plurality of distance measurements to determine whether the final distance value is an outlier;
- if it is determined that the final distance value is not an outlier, performing at least one ocular function test based on the final distance value;
- and
- outputting results of the at least one ocular function test.
