## Abstract

Disclosed herein is an electronic device having a proximity sensor for determining whether an object, such as a user's finger, is in proximity to or in contact with an input mechanism of the electronic device.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A wearable electronic device, comprising:
a housing;
a cover coupled with the housing and defining a cavity in an interior surface of the cover, the cover enclosing the cavity within an interior of the wearable device;
a display positioned within the housing, under the cover;
a rotatable crown disposed exterior to the housing and attached to a shaft extending through the housing; and
an optical proximity sensor coupled to the cover; wherein:
the optical proximity sensor is coupled to the interior surface of the cover and at least partially positioned within the cavity;
the optical proximity sensor includes a light source configured to emit light through a front surface of the cover and in proximity to the rotatable crown; and
the optical proximity sensor is configured to measure reflections of the emitted light received through the cover and determine whether an object is proximate to the rotatable crown based on the measured reflections.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The wearable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the light source includes at least one of a light emitting diode or a laser diode.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The wearable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the light emitted by the light source includes infrared light.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The wearable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the light source includes infrared light and includes one of an optical window or a lens.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The wearable electronic device of claim 1, wherein:
the optical proximity sensor detects an amount of ambient light received through the cover; and
the determination that the object is proximate to the rotatable crown is based on the amount of ambient light detected.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The wearable electronic device of claim 1, wherein the wearable electronic device is operative to alter an operating state of the wearable electronic device when it is determined that the object is proximate to the rotatable crown.

### Claim 7

A wearable electronic device, comprising:
a housing;
a cover coupled with the housing and defining a cavity formed in an interior surface of the cover, the cover enclosing the cavity within an interior of the wearable device;
a display positioned within the housing, under the cover;
an input mechanism extending through the housing and having a surface exterior to the housing;
an optical sensor contained within the housing; and
a processor linked with the optical sensor;
wherein:
the optical sensor is coupled to the interior surface of the cover and at least partially positioned within the cavity and between a lateral edge of the display and the housing;
the optical sensor includes a light source configured to emit light through a front surface of the cover and in proximity to the surface of the input mechanism exterior to the housing;
the optical sensor is configured to measure reflections of the emitted light received through the cover; and
the processor is configured to determine that an object is proximate to the input mechanism based on the measured reflections.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The wearable electronic device of claim 7, wherein:
the optical sensor detects an amount of ambient light received through the display; and
the determination that the object is proximate to the input mechanism is based, at least in part, on the amount of ambient light detected.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein the determination that the object is proximate to the input mechanism is based, at least in part, on a change in the amount of ambient light detected.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein the light source comprises at least one of a light emitting diode and a laser diode.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein the light source transmits light through an optical window in the cover.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein the light transmitted through the cover includes infrared light.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein, when the wearable electronic device is in an inactive state such that the display is operating in a low power state and the processor determines that the object is proximate to the input mechanism, the processor is further operative to cause the wearable electronic device to enter an active state such that the display is displaying content.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The wearable electronic device of claim 8, wherein, when the wearable electronic device is in an active state such that the display is displaying content and the processor determines that the object is proximate to the input mechanism, the processor is further operative to cause the wearable electronic device to remain in the active state.
