Abstract
BMG parts having an uniform and consistently thick metal oxide layer. The metal oxide layer, also known as an interference layer, exhibits a consistent color and durability over the entire surface of the part. Methods and devices involved in forming the BMG parts with uniformly thick interference layers are also provided.

A part comprising:
- a body composed of an amorphous alloy;
- and
- a metal oxide layer formed on at least a portion of a surface of the body, the metal oxide layer having a uniform thickness in a range of 5 nm to 3 μm and configured to produce an optical interference effect and the portion of the surface of the body having an average roughness value (Ra) greater than 0.05 microns and less than or equal to 3 microns.
A portable electronic device comprising a housing and a cover glass, an external surface of the housing being defined by a metal oxide layer grown on at least a portion of an external surface of a bulk metallic glass housing component, the metal oxide layer having a uniform thickness in a range of 5 nm to 3 μm and configured to produce an optical interference effect and the portion of the external surface of the bulk metallic glass housing component having an average roughness value (Ra) greater than 0.05 microns and less than or equal to 3 microns.
