## Abstract

Embodiments are directed to a surfactant of formula (I) and incorporation of one or more surfactants into drilling fluids. The surfactant having the following structure:

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surfactant of formula (I):
where
R1a is a —H, alkyl, or aryl;
x is an integer from 21 to 453;
R2 is alkyl or aryl.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surfactant according to claim 1, where x is selected from 30 to 100.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The surfactant according to claim 1, where R1a is a radical —CH2—CO—NHR5 and the surfactant has a structure according to formula (II):
where: R5 is a alkyl, aryl, alkyl substituted aryl, or aryl substituted alkyl; and R2 and x are defined in formula (I).

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The surfactant according to claim 3, where: x is between 30 and 40; and R2 and R5 are independently a (C1-C12)hydrocarbyl chosen from the group methyl, ethyl, 1-methylethyl, propyl, n-butyl, 1,1-dimethylethyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl, duodecyl.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The surfactant according to claim 3, where: x is 32; R2 and R5 are both n-octyl.
