## Abstract

A method for measuring a patient's expired CO2 level in a non-invasive ventilator system while maintaining a positive inspiratory pressure. The method includes the steps of: receiving, by the non-invasive ventilator system, a signal comprising an instruction to obtain a CO2 measurement from a patient; lowering, by the non-invasive ventilator system in response to the signal, the expiratory positive airway pressure from a first, higher level to a second, lower level for a first time period comprising one or more breaths; obtaining, by a CO2 sensor, a CO2 measurement during the first time period; and returning, after the first time period, the expiratory positive airway pressure to the first, higher level.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for measuring a patient's expired CO2 level in a non-invasive ventilator system while maintaining a positive inspiratory pressure, the non-invasive ventilator system comprising a CO2 sensor, the method comprising the steps of:
receiving, by the non-invasive ventilator system, a first control signal comprising an instruction to obtain a CO2 measurement from a patient for a user-defined first time period;
adjusting, by the non-invasive ventilator system, leak compensation during the user-defined first time period;
lowering, by the non-invasive ventilator system in response to the first control signal for the user-defined first time period comprising one or more breaths, (i) an expiratory positive airway pressure from a first, higher level to a second, lower level, and (ii) an inspiratory positive airway pressure of the non-invasive ventilatory system from a third, higher level to a fourth, lower level;
obtaining, by the CO2 sensor, a CO2 measurement during the user-defined first time period; and
returning, after termination of the user-defined first time period, the expiratory positive airway pressure to the first, higher level and the inspiratory positive airway pressure to the third, higher level.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the first control signal comprising the instruction to obtain the CO2 measurement from the patient is received from a user.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of lowering the expiratory positive airway pressure from the first, higher level to the second, lower level comprises sending a second control signal to a blower of the non-invasive ventilator.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of sending the first control signal from a controller of the non-invasive ventilator system to the CO2 sensor, the first control signal comprising instructions to obtain the CO2 measurement during the first time period.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the second, lower level is approximately 1 cmH2O.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the user-defined first time period is at least two breaths.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the user-defined time period is based on a low leak alarm setting of the non-invasive ventilator system.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of receiving further comprises configuring the non-invasive ventilator system to obtain the CO2 measurement at a user-defined periodic interval.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the CO2 sensor of the non-invasive ventilator system is integrated.

### Claim 10

A non-invasive ventilator configured to measure a patient's expired CO2 level while maintaining a positive inspiratory pressure, the non-invasive ventilator comprising:
a user interface configured to receive, from a user, a signal comprising an instruction to obtain a CO2 measurement from the patient during a user-defined first time period comprising-one or more breaths;
a CO2 sensor configured to obtain one or more expired CO2 measurements from the patient during the user-defined first time period the one or more expired CO2 measurements including the CO2 measurement; and
a controller in communication with the CO2 sensor, the controller configured to: lower, in response to the signal for the user-defined first time period, (i) an expiratory positive airway pressure from a first, higher level to a second, lower level, and (ii) an inspiratory positive airway pressure of the non-invasive ventilatory system from a third, higher level to a fourth, lower level; direct the CO2 sensor to obtain the CO2 measurement during the user-defined first time period; track the one or more breaths; and return, after termination of the user-defined first time period, the expiratory positive airway pressure to the first, higher level and the inspiratory positive airway pressure to the third, higher level.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The non-invasive ventilator of claim 10, wherein the controller is configured to lower the expiratory positive airway pressure by controlling an activity of a blower of the non-invasive ventilator.
