Abstract
Composite materials are made by impregnating a non-conductive material with a conducting monomer to form a monomer-impregnated non-conductive material, and polymerizing the monomer-impregnated non-conductive material to form the composite material. The composite materials are used in medical devices and implants.
Claims15
A method of making a composite material, the method comprising:
- soaking a non-conductive material in an infusion medium comprising an organic solvent capable of swelling the non-conductive material;
- during or after the immersing step, impregnating the non-conductive material with a conducting monomer to form a monomer-impregnated non-conductive material;
- and
- polymerizing the monomer-impregnated non-conductive material to form the composite material,
- wherein the composite material has greater conductivity as compared to the non-conductive material impregnated with the conducting monomer without soaking in the infusion medium, wherein the polymerizing step comprises
- electrochemically polymerizing the monomer within the monomer-impregnated non-conductive material by placing the monomer-impregnated non-conductive material in a deposition medium containing counter-ions and a solvent and applying a current.
