## Abstract

Metal organic framework membranes can be used in gas separation applications.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A thin-film membrane comprising a continuous zeolite-like metal-organic framework (ZMOF) thin film intergrown on a substrate; wherein the continuous ZMOF thin film has a sodalite topology.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The membrane of claim 1, wherein the continuous ZMOF thin film includes a metal and an organic linker.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The membrane of claim 2, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of transition metals, Group 13 metals, and lanthanide metals.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The membrane of claim 2, wherein the organic linker includes a heteroaromatic group containing a nitrogen.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The membrane of claim 2, wherein the organic linker is an imidazole-based linker or pyrimidine-based linker.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The membrane of claim 1, wherein the thin-film membrane is cation-exchanged with Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, or Ca2+.

### Claim 7

A thin-film membrane comprising a continuous zeolite-like metal-organic framework (ZMOF) thin film intergrown on a substrate, wherein the ZMOF thin film includes a metal selected from the group consisting of transition metals, Group 13 metals, and lanthanide metals, and an organic linker.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The membrane of claim 7, wherein the organic linker includes a heteroaromatic group containing a nitrogen.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The membrane of claim 7, wherein the organic linker is an imidazole-based linker or pyrimidine-based linker.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The membrane of claim 7, wherein the thin-film membrane is cation-exchanged with Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, or Ca2+.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The membrane of claim 7, wherein the thin-film membrane has a selectivity for CO2 over one or more of He, H2, N2, O2, CH4, C2H4, and C2H6.

### Claim 12

A method of separating chemical species, comprising:
passing a fluid composition through a thin-film membrane, wherein the thin-film membrane includes a continuous zeolite-like metal-organic framework (ZMOF) thin film intergrown on a substrate.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the fluid composition includes He, H2, N2, O2, CO2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, or a combination thereof.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the thin-film membrane has a selectivity for CO2 over one or more of He, H2, N2, O2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the continuous ZMOF thin film has a sodalite topology.

### Claim 16 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the continuous ZMOF thin film includes a metal and an organic linker.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of transition metals, Group 13 metals, and lanthanide metals.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein the organic linker includes a heteroaromatic group containing a nitrogen.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, wherein the organic linker is an imidazole-based linker or pyrimidine-based linker.

### Claim 20 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, wherein the thin-film membrane is cation-exchanged with Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, or Ca2+.
