## Abstract

A surgical instrument for minimally invasive surgical procedures having a handle portion, an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle portion, an end effector movable between a first position and a second position, and an elongated tissue probe movably positioned within the elongated portion. The probe is movable between a retracted position and an advanced position, wherein movement of the probe moves the end effector from the first position to the second position.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An end effector of a surgical instrument comprising:
first and second jaws transitionable between an open position and a closed position;
a tissue probe for imaging tissue, the tissue probe movable between a retracted position and an advanced position; and
a sheath operatively coupled with the first and second jaws such that axial displacement of the sheath transitions the first and second jaws between the open and closed positions, wherein the tissue probe is operatively associated with the sheath such that transitioning the first and second jaws to the open position transitions the tissue probe to the retracted position and transitioning the first and second jaws to the closed position transitions the tissue probe to the advanced position, wherein the tissue probe is fixed within the sheath.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The end effector according to claim 1, wherein at least one jaw of the first or second jaws has a cavity to receive tissue therein.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The end effector according to claim 2, wherein the tissue probe is a visualization probe for imaging the tissue received within the cavity of the at least one jaw of the first or second jaws.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The end effector according to claim 1, wherein distal movement of the sheath transitions the first and second jaws to the closed position.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The end effector according to claim 1, wherein distal movement of the sheath transitions the tissue probe to the advanced position.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The end effector according to claim 1, wherein the tissue probe is a light emitting illumination probe.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The end effector according to claim 1, wherein the sheath includes transverse posts, and the first and second jaws define cam slots configured to slidably receive the transverse posts.

### Claim 8

A surgical instrument for minimally invasive surgical procedures comprising:
an elongated portion;
first and second jaws extending distally of the elongated portion, the first and second jaws transitionable between open and closed positions;
a sheath extending through the elongated portion, the sheath operatively coupled with the first and second jaws such that axial displacement of the sheath transitions the first and second jaws between the open and closed positions; and
a probe disposed at least partially within the sheath and extending distally from the sheath, wherein axial displacement of the sheath transitions the probe between an advanced position in which the first and second jaws are in the closed position and a retracted position in which the first and second jaws are in the open position.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The surgical instrument according to claim 8, wherein at least one jaw of the first or second jaws defines a cavity to retain tissue therein.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The surgical instrument according to claim 9, wherein the probe is a visualization probe for imaging tissue received within the cavity of the at least one jaw of the first or second jaws.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The surgical instrument according to claim 8, wherein the first and second jaws are configured to inhibit passage of light into the first and second jaws when the first and second jaws are in the closed position.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The surgical instrument according to claim 8, wherein the probe is a light emitting illumination probe.

### Claim 13

An end effector of a surgical instrument comprising:
first and second jaws transitionable between an open position and a closed position, the first and second jaws defining cam slots;
a tissue probe for imaging tissue, the tissue probe movable between a retracted position and an advanced position; and
a sheath operatively coupled with the first and second jaws such that axial displacement of the sheath transitions the first and second jaws between the open and closed positions, the sheath including transverse posts slidably received in the cam slots of the first and second jaws, wherein the tissue probe is operatively associated with the sheath such that transitioning the first and second jaws to the open position transitions the tissue probe to the retracted position and transitioning the first and second jaws to the closed position transitions the tissue probe to the advanced position.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The end effector according to claim 13, wherein the tissue probe is fixed within the sheath.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The end effector according to claim 13, wherein at least one jaw of the first or second jaws has a cavity to receive tissue therein.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The end effector according to claim 15, wherein the tissue probe is a visualization probe for imaging the tissue received within the cavity of the at least one jaw of the first or second jaws.
