## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated X08N789 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof are produced by crossing inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant by crossing hybrid maize variety X08N789 with another maize plant are disclosed. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X08N789 through backcrossing or genetic transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby are described. Maize variety X08N789, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X08N789 are provided. Methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X08N789 and methods of using maize variety X08N789 are disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A seed of hybrid maize variety X08N789, representative seed produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH48H0 with a second plant of variety PH2RDP, wherein representative seed of the varieties PH48H0 and PH2RDP have been deposited under NCMA Accession Numbers 202004010 and 202006044, respectively.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

A plant or plant part of hybrid maize variety X08N789 grown from the seed of claim 1, wherein the plant part comprises at least one cell of hybrid maize variety X08N789.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A method of producing the seed of claim 1, the method comprising crossing a plant of variety PH48H0 with a plant of variety PH2RDP.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The seed of claim 1, further comprising a transgene, wherein the transgene is introduced by backcrossing or genetic transformation into the variety PH48H0, the variety PH2RDP, or both varieties PH48H0 and PH2RDP.

### Claim 5

A seed of hybrid maize variety X08N789 further comprising a single locus conversion, wherein a plant grown from the seed comprises a trait conferred by the single locus conversion, and wherein the seed is produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH48H0 with a second plant of variety PH2RDP, wherein the first plant, the second plant or both further comprise the single locus conversion, and wherein representative seed of the varieties PH48H0 and PH2RDP without the single locus conversion have been deposited under NCMA Accession Numbers 202004010 and 202006044, respectively.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed of claim 5, wherein the locus conversion confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed of claim 5, further comprising a seed treatment on the surface of the seed.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed of claim 5.

### Claim 9 (depends on 5)

A plant or plant part grown from the hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed of claim 5, the plant part comprising at least one cell of hybrid maize variety X08N789 further comprising the single locus conversion.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising starch, syrup, silage, fat or protein, the method comprising producing the commodity plant product from the plant or plant part of claim 9.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or plant part of claim 9 to produce the second maize plant.

### Claim 12

A method for producing a hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed further comprising a locus conversion, the method comprising crossing a first plant of variety PH48H0 with a second plant of variety PH2RDP, representative seed of the varieties PH48H0 and PH2RDP having been deposited under NCMA Accession Numbers 202004010 and 202006044, wherein at least one of the varieties PH48H0 and PH2RDP further comprises the locus conversion.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

An F1 hybrid maize variety X08N789 seed further comprising a locus conversion produced by the method of claim 12, wherein the seed produces a plant expressing the traits conferred by the locus conversion and comprising otherwise all the physiological and morphological characteristics of maize variety X08N789 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The seed of claim 13, further comprising a seed treatment on the surface of the seed.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The seed of claim 13, wherein the locus conversion confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance, disease resistance, waxy starch, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified phytic acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and modified protein metabolism.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)
