Abstract
An antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition contains one or more antimicrobial agents disposed therein. Methods for making and using the glazing composition are disclosed, as well as substrates having a fired antimicrobial glaze thereon. The antimicrobial agents comprise metallic oxides, with a subset of the disclosed combinations exhibiting synergistic effect in fired glazes.
Claims1
A method for manufacturing an antimicrobial ceramic glazing composition, comprising:
- adding, to the ceramic glaze base, a synergistic antimicrobial composition that is one of:
- 2% Ag2CO3+2% Bi2O3,
- 2% Ag2CO3+2% CuO,
- 2% Ag2CO3+2% SnO2,
- 2% Ag2CO3+2% ZnO,
- 2% Ag2CO3+4% ZnO,
- 2% Bi2O3+2% CuO,
- 2% Bi2O3+4% CuO,
- 2% CuO+4% Ag2CO3,
- 2% CuO+4% SnO2,
- 2% CuO+2% TiO2,
- 2% CuO+4% TiO2
- 2% CuO+4% ZnO,
- 2% SnO2+4% Ag2CO3,
- 2% SnO2+4% CuO,
- 2% TiO2+4% Ag2CO3,
- 2% TiO2+4% CuO,
- 2% ZnO+4% Ag2CO3, or
- 2% ZnO+4% CuO;
- milling the ceramic glaze base and added antimicrobial composition;
- hydrating the milled ceramic glaze base;
- and
- optionally, remixing the hydrated glaze base.
