Abstract
This disclosure relates to techniques for selecting a low power measurement mode (LPM mode). A wireless device may enter an idle mode, determine that it is stationary, and enter an LPM mode. In the LPM mode, the wireless device may perform cell measurements at a reduced frequency.
Claims20
A method for a wireless user equipment device (UE), the method comprising:
- entering an idle mode and camping on a first cell, wherein the UE performs intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements at a first rate while in the idle mode;
- determining a motion status of the UE, wherein the motion status is determined over a first amount of time, wherein the first amount of time is 5 minutes;
- and
- entering a low power measurements mode (LPM mode) based at least in part on the motion status of the UE over the first amount of time, wherein the UE performs intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements at a second rate, wherein the second rate is smaller than the first rate, while in the LPM mode.
A wireless user equipment device (UE), comprising:
- an antenna;
- a radio coupled to the antenna;
- and
- a processor coupled to the radio, wherein the processor is configured to cause the UE to:
- perform intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements at a first rate, while operating in a first mode;
- determine that the UE device a motion status of the UE over a first amount of time;
- and
- based at least in part on the motion status of the UE over the first amount of time, enter a second mode, wherein while in the second mode the device either:
- does not perform intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements, or
- performs intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements at a rate lower than the first rate.
An apparatus, comprising a processor, wherein the processor is configured to cause a user equipment device (UE) to:
- operate in an idle mode;
- determine a motion status of the UE over a first amount of time;
- enter a low power measurements mode (LPM mode) in response to the determination, wherein the UE avoids performing at least some intra-frequency and inter-frequency measurements while operating in the LPM mode.
