Abstract
Techniques are provided for persistent hole reservation. For example, hole reservation flags of operations targeting a first storage object of a first node are replicated into replication operations targeting a second storage object of a second node during a transition operation to transition the first storage object and the second storage object from an asynchronous replication state to a synchronous replication state. In another example, the second storage object is grown to a size of a replication punch hole operation that failed due to targeting a file block number greater than an end of size of the second storage object.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- performing a transition operation to transition a first storage object and a second storage object from an asynchronous replication state to a synchronous replication state;
- synchronizing the first storage object and the second storage object during the transition operation;
- and
- replicating a hole reservation flag of an operation targeting the first storage object into a replication operation targeting the second storage object during the transition operation, wherein the hole reservation flag is set to indicate that a persistent hole reservation is enabled to reserve storage space that is to be written to by the operation.
A non-transitory machine readable medium comprising instructions for performing a method, which when executed by a machine, causes the machine to:
- perform a transition operation to transition a first storage object and a second storage object from an asynchronous replication state to a synchronous replication state;
- synchronize the first storage object and the second storage object during the transition operation;
- and
- replicate a hole reservation flag of an operation targeting the first storage object into a replication operation targeting the second storage object during the transition operation, wherein the hole reservation flag is set to indicate that a persistent hole reservation is enabled to reserve storage space that is to be written to by the operation, and wherein the hole reservation flag causes a reservation of corresponding storage space within the second storage object.
A computing device comprising:
- a memory comprising machine executable code for performing a method;
- and
- a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to execute the machine executable code to cause the processor to:
- perform a transition operation to transition a first storage object and a second storage object from an asynchronous replication state to a synchronous replication state;
- synchronize the first storage object and the second storage object during the transition operation;
- and
- replicate a hole reservation flag of an operation targeting the first storage object into a replication operation targeting the second storage object during the transition operation, wherein the hole reservation flag is set to indicate that a persistent hole reservation is enabled to reserve storage space that is to be written to by the operation.
