Write folding mechanism using reusable shared striping in a storage system

A method comprising:

• receiving data associated with at least one input-output request from a cache of a storage system, the storage system comprising a plurality of storage devices configured to store data blocks, the data blocks being distributed across the plurality of storage devices in a plurality of data stripes, the plurality of data stripes comprising a first set of data stripes and a second set of data stripes, the first set of data stripes being configured to implement write folding of data to be stored in the second set of data stripes;
• storing the received data sequentially in at least one data stripe of the first set of data stripes;
• determining whether or not an amount of data stored in the first set of data stripes is greater than a threshold amount of data;
• and
• in response to determining that the amount of data stored in the first set of data stripes is greater than the threshold amount of data, destaging the at least one data stripe of the first set of data stripes to the second set of data stripes;
• wherein the method is performed by a storage controller of the storage system, the storage controller comprising at least one processor coupled to memory.

A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, the program code being executable by at least one processing device of a storage system, the storage system comprising a cache and a plurality of storage devices configured to store data blocks, the data blocks being distributed across the plurality of storage devices in a plurality of data stripes, the plurality of data stripes comprising a first set of data stripes and a second set of data stripes, the first set of data stripes being configured to implement write folding of data to be stored in the second set of data stripes, wherein the program code, when executed by the at least one processing device, causes the at least one processing device:

• to receive data associated with at least one input-output request from the cache;
• to store the received data sequentially in at least one data stripe of the first set of data stripes;
• to determine whether or not an amount of data stored in the first set of data stripes is greater than a threshold amount of data;
• and
• in response to determining that the amount of data stored in the first set of data stripes is greater than the threshold amount of data, to destage the at least one data stripe of the first set of data stripes to the second set of data stripes.
