Abstract
Disclosed herein are systems and techniques for adaptive use of multiple power supplies in a communication system. For example, in some embodiments, a slave device may include: an upstream transceiver to couple to an upstream link of a bus of a communication system; and circuitry to couple to the upstream link of the bus and to a local power supply, wherein the circuitry is to switch from providing the local power supply to power the slave device to providing bus power supplied by the upstream link of the bus to power the slave device.
Claims25
A slave device capable of adaptively utilizing multiple power supplies, comprising:
- an upstream transceiver to couple to an upstream link of a bus of a communication system;
- and
- circuitry to couple to the upstream link of the bus and to a local power supply, wherein the circuitry is to switch from providing the local power supply to power the slave device to providing bus power supplied by the upstream link of the bus to power the slave device, and
- wherein the circuitry includes a filter to control a turn-on time when the circuitry switches to providing bus power supplied by the upstream link of the bus to power the slave device.
A communication system capable of adaptively utilizing multiple power supplies to power a communication device, comprising:
- a master device;
- a slave device;
- and
- a communication link between the master device and the slave device, wherein the master device is to provide a bias voltage on the communication link, the slave device includes circuitry to switch from being powered by a local power supply to being powered by the bias voltage on the communication link, and the circuitry includes a filter to control a turn-on time when the circuitry switches to being powered by the bias voltage on the communication link.
A method of powering a slave device in a communication system without interrupting communication by the slave device in the communication system, comprising:
- utilizing a first power supply to power the slave device;
- monitoring an upstream communication link for a line fault;
- and
- upon an interruption or inadequacy of the first power supply, utilizing a second power supply to power the slave device without triggering a line fault, wherein the first power supply is different from the second power supply, the first power supply is one of a local power supply and a bias voltage from an upstream communication link, the second power supply is an other one of the local power supply and the bias voltage from the upstream communication link, and utilizing a second power supply to power the slave device without triggering a line fault includes controlling a turn-on time of use of the second power supply.
