Abstract
A portable information handling system housing rotationally couples first and second housing portions with a hinge assembly having a minor axis that moves relative to a main axis to define a spacing between the housing portions. A main bracket couples to the first housing portion and rotationally couples through first and second telescoping members with first and second secondary brackets disposed at opposing sides of the main bracket and coupled to the second housing portion. The telescoping members synchronize through a linkage of the main bracket to adjust the distance between the minor and main axes for 360 degrees of rotation and adapting to an object located between the housing portions when the housing portions close.
Claims20
An information handling system comprising:
- a housing having first and second housing portions;
- a processor disposed in the housing and operable to execute instructions to process information;
- a memory disposed in the housing and interfaced with the processor, the memory operable to store the instructions and information;
- a display disposed in the housing and interfaced with the processor, the display operable to present the information as visual images;
- and
- a hinge assembly rotationally coupling the first and second housing portions to rotate between open closed positions, the hinge assembly having a main bracket coupled to the first housing portion, a first telescoping section rotationally coupled at a first end of the main bracket, a second telescoping section rotationally coupled to a second end of the main bracket opposite the first end, the first and second telescoping sections terminating with a rotationally coupled secondary bracket coupled to the second housing portion, the first and second telescoping sections rotating relative to the main bracket during rotation of the first and second housing portions to adapt to changes in the relative vertical position of the first and second housing portions.
A method for rotating first and second housing portions of an information handling system housing, the method comprising:
- coupling the first housing portion to a main bracket having a main axis;
- coupling the second housing portion to first and second secondary brackets disposed at opposing first and second ends of the main bracket;
- rotationally coupling a first telescoping member between the main bracket first end and the first secondary bracket;
- rotationally coupling a second telescoping member between the main bracket second end and the second secondary bracket;
- rotating the first and second housing portions about a minor axis, the minor axis shifting relative to the main axis by rotation and telescoping of the first and second telescoping members.
A hinge comprising:
- a main bracket configured to couple to a first housing portion;
- a first telescoping member rotationally coupled at a first end to a first end of the main bracket;
- a second telescoping member rotationally coupled at a first end to a second end of the main bracket:
- a first secondary bracket rotationally coupled to the first telescoping member at a second end, the first secondary bracket configured to couple to a second housing portion;
- and
- a second secondary bracket rotationally coupled to the second telescoping member at a second end, the second secondary bracket configured to couple to the second housing portion;
- wherein the first and second telescoping members shift a minor axis of rotation of the first and secondary brackets relative to a main axis of the main bracket as the first and second housing portions rotate relative to each other and about the main axis.
