Imaging system and method for monitoring a field of view

An imaging system comprising:

• a two-dimensional array comprising photo elements on which the field of view is imaged;
• a processing unit configured to
• determine, for the photo elements, respective distances between the photo elements and one or more surfaces located in a field of view of the imaging system based on analysis of light emitted by the imaging system into the field of view and subsequently arriving on the photo elements,
• determine respective distance vectors based on the distances, wherein the distance vectors comprise respective distance components having values that are based on the distances, and
• aggregate the distance vectors to yield a coordinate image;
• a first memory unit configured to store the coordinate image;
• and
• a second memory unit configured to store logical relations respectively corresponding to at least a subset of the photo, wherein the logical relations define respective upper values and lower values of the distance components, and the respective upper values and lower values defined by the logical relations collectively define a volume in the field of view having a shape corresponding to an object to be detected,
• wherein the processing unit is further configured to
• determine, based on analysis of the distance vectors, whether the object to be detected is present within the volume, and
• output a trigger signal in response to determining that the object to be detected is present within the volume.
