Compositions and methods of using the same for treatment of neurodegenerative and mitochondrial disease

A method of treating a neurodegenerative disease comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of a compound having a structure represented by a formula:

• wherein X is selected from C—H, C—CH3, C—CH2CH3, C—CH2CH2CH3, and CR3;
• R3 is selected from a substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, a substituted or unsubstituted heterocycloalkyl, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl;
• L1 is a bond, substituted or unsubstituted alkylene, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkylene;
• R1 is hydrogen, oxo, halogen, —CY3, —CN, —SO2Cl, —SOvR10, —SOvNR7R8, —NHNH2, —ONR7R8, NHC═(O)NHNH2, —NHC═(O)NR7R8, —N(O)m, —NR7R8, —C(O)R9, —C(O)OR9, —C(O)NR7R8, —OR10, —NR7SO2R10, —N(R7)C═(O)R9, —NR7C(O)—OR9, —NR7OR9, —OCY3, —OCHY2, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl;
• and
• R2 is N;
• R4 is hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl;
• R5 is CH, CCH3, CCF3, or CC6H5;
• R6 is N or CH;
• R7 and R8 are independently hydrogen, oxo, halogen, —CF3, —CN, —OH, —NH2, —COOH, —CONH2, —NO2, —SH, —SO2Cl, —SO3H, —SO4H, —SO2NH2, —NHNH2, —ONH2, —NHC(O)NHNH2, —NHC(O)NH2, —NHSO2H, —NHC(O)H, —NHC(O)—OH, —NHOH, —OCF3, —OCHF2, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl;
• R9 and R10 are independently hydrogen, halogen, —CF3, —CN, —OH, —NH2, —COOH, —CONH2, —NO2, —SH, —SO2Cl, —SO3H, —SO4H, —SO2NH2, —NHNH2, —ONH2, —NHC(O)NHNH2, —NHC(O)NH2, —NHC(O)—OH, —NHOH, —OCF3, —OCHF2, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heteroalkyl, substituted or unsubstittuted cycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted heterocycloalkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl;
• m and v are independently 1 or 2;
• and
• n is independently an integer from 0 to 4, and Y is independently —Cl, —Br, —I, or —F,
• or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, provided the compound is not kinetin or cytokinin, and
• wherein the neurodegenerative disorder is selected from Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Leigh syndrome.
