Abstract
The present invention is directed to a method of increasing the brightness of non-wood fibers and nonwoven fabric fabrics produced by the method. In one aspect, the method includes forming a mixture of non-wood fibers and exposing the mixture to a brightening agent to produce brightened fibers. The brightening agent is oxygen gas, peracetic acid, a peroxide compound, or a combination thereof. The brightened fibers have a brightness greater than the fibers of the mixture before exposure as measured by MacBeth UV-C standard.
Claims48
A method comprising:
- forming non-wood fibers into fiber mat at consistency of about 20% to about 50%, the non-wood fibers having a mean length of about 5 to about 95 millimeters (mm);
- and
- exposing the fiber mat at the consistency of about 20% to about 50% to a brightening agent to produce brightened fibers, the brightening agent comprising a peroxide compound and oxygen gas, the oxygen gas being dissolved in solution and being about 0.1 to about 10.0% on fiber oxygen;
- wherein the brightened fibers have a brightness greater than the non-wood fibers before exposure as measured by a TAPPI brightness test method;
- and
- wherein the non-wood fibers are bast fibers.

- and
- exposing the fiber mat at the consistency of about 20% to about 50% to a brightening agent to produce low-shire fibers, the brightening agent comprising a peroxide compound and oxygen gas, the oxygen gas being dissolved in solution and being about 0.1 to about 10.0% on fiber oxygen;
- wherein the low-shine fibers have less visible shive content than the non-wood fibers before exposure;
- and
- wherein the non-wood fibers are bast fibers.
