Abstract
A method or apparatus switches between binaural sound and stereo sound in response to head movements of a listener. An electronic device provides the listener with binaural sound at a sound localization point (SLP) in a field-of-view of the listener. Binaural sound at the SLP switches to one of mono or stereo sound when head movements of the listener cause the SLP to move outside the field-of-view.
Claims20
A method executed by one or more electronic devices, the method comprising:
- providing, with the one or more electronic devices and to a listener, binaural sound of a voice of a person that externally localizes to the listener at a sound localization point (SLP) that occurs in empty space in a field-of-view of the listener;
- tracking, with the one or more electronic devices, head movements of the listener to detect when the SLP moves outside the field-of-view of the listener;
- and
- displaying, with the one or more electronic devices worn on a head of the listener and in response to the SLP moving outside the field-of-view, a visual indication that points to a location of where the SLP is located outside the field-of-view.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium that one or more electronic devices execute as a method comprising:
- playing, to a listener, sound as binaural sound that externally localizes to the listener at a sound localization point (SLP) in empty space located in a field-of-view of a display of a wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of the listener;
- tracking head movements of the listener that determine when the head of the listener moves and causes the SLP to be outside the field-of-view of the display of the WED worn on the head of the listener;
- and
- displaying, with the display of the WED and in response to determining the head movements caused the SLP to be outside the field-of-view of the display, a visual indication that provides a location of where the SLP exists outside the field-of-view of the display.
A wearable electronic device (WED) worn on a head of a listener, the WED comprising:
- head tracking that tracks head movements of the listener while the WED plays sound to the listener that externally localizes to the listener at a sound localization point (SLP) in empty space located in a field-of-view of the WED;
- and
- one or more processors that execute instructions to determine when the SLP moves outside the field-of-view of the WED and to display, with a display of the WED and in response to determining that the SLP moved outside the field-of-view, a visual indication that shows a direction where the SLP is located outside the field-of-view.
