Abstract
A signature encoded light system includes at least one light source. The at least one light source is configured to output a first encoded light signature embedded within light in the visible spectrum. A light signature detection device is configured to receive a composite light signal formed with light from the at least one light source and ambient light. The light signature detection device is configured to identify the first encoded light signature.

A system to produce signature encoded light, comprising:
- a modulation controller including:
- a plurality of one-bit cells arranged as a linear feedback shift register (LFSR), the LFSR having at least one tap;
- a seed value source coupled to the LFSR and arranged to provide at least one seed value;
- combinatorial logic coupled to the at least one tap of the LFSR to provide at least one linear feedback path for the LFSR;
- and
- a clock input to pass a clock signal arranged to drive bits from the LFSR, the bits driven from the LFSR forming a modulation signal having encoded signature information, the encoded signature based on the combinatorial logic, the at least one tap, and the at least one seed value;
- and
- a modulating power source including a power supply and a code modulation state translator module, wherein the modulating power source is configured to receive the modulation signal having the encoded signature information and configured to produce a modulated signal, the modulated signal arranged to modulate an amplitude of light output from at least one light source according to the encoded signature information,
- wherein the modulated signal is arranged to modulate the amplitude of light output from the at least one light source between a “more on” state for a bit having a first binary state and a “less on” state for a bit having a second binary state wherein the “more on” state produces a light output that is at least 100 percent of nominal light output and wherein the “less on” state produces a light output that is at least 90 percent and less than 100 percent of nominal light output when the at least one light source is perceived to be in an “on” state.
A method to encode a signature in light output from a light source, the output light being in the visible spectrum, comprising:
- loading a seed value in a linear feedback shift register (LFSR), the seed value arranged to produce a light signature formed as a sequence of bits exiting the LFSR, the light signature arranged to identify the light source;
- clocking the LFSR to output the light signature as a stream of binary bits, each exiting bit representing one bit of the light signature;
- passing each bit of the light signature stream to a code modulation state translator;
- modulating light that is output from the light source according to the bits of the light signature stream wherein the modulated light is output at a first amplitude or a second amplitude based on a binary state of each bit of the light signature stream;
- and
- wherein the first amplitude is less than 5 percent of the nominal output of the light source and the second amplitude is less than 15 percent of the nominal output of the light source when the light source is perceived to be in an “off” state.
At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored contents to configure at least one computing system to perform a method, the method comprising:
- loading a seed value into a feedback shift register;
- producing at least one encoded light signature with the feedback shift register;
- clocking the feedback shift register to output the light signature as a stream of binary bits, each exiting bit representing one bit of the light signature;
- passing each bit of the light signature stream to a code modulation state translator;
- modulating light output from a plurality of light sources wherein light output from each one of the plurality of light sources is modulated with a different light signature;
- and
- wherein the modulated signal is arranged to modulate the amplitude of light output from the at least one light source between a “more on” state for a bit having a first binary state and a “less on” state for a bit having a second binary state wherein the “more on” state produces a light output that is between 10 percent and 20 percent of nominal light output and wherein the “less on” state produces a light output that is less than 10 percent of nominal light output.
