Abstract
A battery module includes a housing. The battery module also includes a cell stack disposed in the housing and including a battery cell. The battery module also includes a force gauge in mechanical communication with the cell stack and configured to measure a force generated by a swelling of the cell stack. The battery module also includes a control module configured to receive data indicative of the force and to estimate a remaining usable life of the battery module based on the data.
Claims20
A battery module, comprising:
- a housing;
- a cell stack disposed in the housing and comprising multiple lithium ion battery cells;
- a force gauge in mechanical communication with the cell stack and configured to measure a force generated by a swelling of the cell stack;
- a control module comprising a processor programmed to receive data indicative of the force and to estimate a remaining usable life of the battery module based on the data;
- and
- wherein the force gauge is further configured to measure a second force generated by vibrations of the battery module, and the processor is further programmed to filter data indicative of the second force from the data indicative of the force generated by the swelling of the cell stack.

A lithium ion battery module, comprising:
- a housing;
- a plurality of lithium ion battery cells disposed in the housing, wherein the plurality of lithium ion battery cells are arranged in a cell stack;
- a force gauge mechanically coupled to the plurality of lithium ion battery cells and configured to measure an overall measured force having a first force generated by a swelling of the cell stack and a second force generated by vibrations of the battery module;
- and
- a control module communicatively coupled to the force gauge, to decouple the second force from the overall measured force, and comprising a processor programmed to determine a state of charge, to acquire data indicative of the first force and to estimate a remaining usable life of the lithium ion battery module based on the data.
