Abstract
A high efficiency configuration for a solar cell module comprises solar cells arranged in an overlapping shingled manner and conductively bonded to each other in their overlapping regions to form super cells, which may be arranged to efficiently use the area of the solar module.
Claims20
A solar module comprising:
- a first super cell comprising a plurality of silicon solar cells, each comprising an n-p diode junction disposed between a front surface and an oppositely positioned rear surface of the silicon solar cell, the silicon solar cells arranged in line with sides of adjacent silicon solar cells overlapping in a shingled manner with, for pairs of adjacent silicon solar cells, a rear surface of one of the silicon solar cells overlapping and conductively bonded to a front surface of the other silicon solar cell to electrically and mechanically connect the silicon solar cells in series, a first one of the silicon solar cells arranged as a first end silicon solar cell at a first end of the super cell and a second one of the silicon solar cells arranged as a second end silicon solar cell at a second end of the super cell opposite from the first end of the super cell;
- a first conductive metal ribbon conductively bonded to a metallization pattern disposed on the rear surface of the first end silicon solar cell and providing an electrical output from the super cell having a first polarity;
- and
- a second conductive metal ribbon conductively bonded to a metallization pattern disposed on the rear surface of the second end silicon solar cell and providing an electrical output from the super cell having a second polarity opposite from the first polarity;
- wherein the rear surfaces of the first and second end solar cells are on the n side of the n-p junction in the first and second end solar cells, or the rear surfaces of the first and second end solar cells are on the p side of the n-p junctions in the first and second end solar cells.
