Apparatuses for controlling heat for rapid thermal processing of carbonaceous material and methods for the same

An apparatus for controlling heat for rapid thermal processing of carbonaceous material, comprising:

• i) an inorganic particle reheater configured to combust char with an oxygen-containing gas in a fluidized bubbling bed of inorganic particles;
• and
• ii) an inorganic particle cooler configured to receive a stream of the inorganic particles from the inorganic particle reheater, the inorganic particle cooler comprising:
• a) a vessel configured to provide a flow path for the stream of the inorganic particles from a vessel inlet to a vessel outlet;
• b) a plurality of cooling tubes disposed in the vessel, at least one of the plurality of cooling tubes comprising:
• I) an outer tube comprising an exterior, the exterior exposed to the flow path;
• II) an inner tube concentrically disposed within the outer tube;
• and
• III) an outer channel defined by an outer surface of the inner tube and an inner surface of said outer tube, the outer channel configured to receive a cooling medium, to bring the cooling medium into thermal communication with at least a first portion of the stream of the inorganic particles to form a heated cooling medium and a partially cooled at least a first portion of the stream of the inorganic particles, and to pass the heated cooling medium to an interior of the inner tube;
• and
• c) an inlet to the outer channel adapted to receive a supply of the cooling medium.
