Abstract
A distributed control node enables total harmonic control. The control node measures current drawn by a load, including harmonics of the primary current. A metering device can generate an energy signature unique to the load including recording a complex current vector for the load in operation identifying the primary current with a real power component and a reactive power component, and identifying the harmonics with a real power component, a reactive power component, and an angular displacement relative to the primary current. The control node can control a noise contribution of the load due to the harmonics as seen at a point of common coupling to reduce noise introduced onto the grid network from the load.

A distributed control node within a power grid system, comprising:
- an energy meter on a consumer side of a point of common coupling (PCC) of a power grid, the energy meter separate from a grid meter that measures power delivered by the power grid for a utility to charge a consumer for the power delivered, the energy meter to measure current flow on the consumer side of the PCC, the current flow including an aggregate of multiple control nodes downstream from the PCC, the multiple control nodes associated with consumer nodes;
- and
- a controller to identify an energy signature unique to a control node from the measured current flow, the energy signature including a complex current vector combining a primary current with a real power component and a reactive power component, and harmonics of the primary current with real power component, reactive power component, and an angular displacement relative to the primary current;
- the controller to control a noise contribution of the harmonics as seen at the PCC to reduce noise introduced onto the power grid from the downstream control nodes;
- the controller to dynamically change the control of the noise contribution in response to a change to the primary current.

- an energy meter on the consumer side of the PCC, the energy meter separate from a grid meter that measures power delivered by the power grid for a utility to charge a consumer for the power delivered, the energy meter to measure current flow on the consumer side of the PCC, the current flow including an aggregate of multiple control nodes downstream from the PCC, the multiple control nodes associated with consumer nodes;
- and
- a controller to identify an energy signature unique to a control node from the measured current flow, the energy signature including a complex current vector combining a primary current with a real power component and a reactive power component, and harmonics of the primary current with real power component, reactive power component, and an angular displacement relative to the primary current;
- the controller to control a noise contribution of the harmonics as seen at the PCC to reduce noise introduced onto the power grid from the downstream control nodes, including generation of reactive power from the local energy source;
- the controller to dynamically change the control of the noise contribution in response to a change to the primary current.
A method for monitoring power at a power grid node, comprising:
