## Abstract

Methods for determining a transmission timeslot at an endpoint in a communications network are provided. The method includes receiving a message having a received downlink strength at an endpoint; determining an uplink strength for the endpoint based on information in the received message; and allocating a timeslot for uplink transmission from the endpoint based on the determined uplink strength. Related endpoints and computer program products are provided.

determining that the ALOHA message has a length that is greater than a threshold length for the transmission timeslot;
requesting a pause of messaging responsive to the determination that the ALOHA message has a length that is greater than the threshold length; and
sending the ALOHA message during the pause.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein determining an uplink strength comprises one of receiving an uplink strength in the ALOHA message received at the endpoint and deriving the uplink strength from the received downlink strength.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein allocating a timeslot for uplink transmission comprises one of locating the determined uplink strength on a lookup table to identify the timeslot for uplink transmission and dividing the determined uplink strength by a number of timeslots to identify the timeslot for uplink transmission.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the steps of receiving, determining and allocating are repeated periodically.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the communications network implementing a modified slotted ALOHA protocol includes a plurality of timeslots and wherein a spacing between each of the plurality of timeslots is from about 5 to about 30 dB and wherein each of the plurality of timeslots has a duration from about 30 seconds to about 1 minute.

### Claim 8

An endpoint in a communications network implementing a modified slotted ALOHA protocol the endpoint comprising a processor configured to:
receive an ALOHA message having a received downlink strength at the endpoint;
self-determine an uplink strength derived by measurement of the downlink strength; and
allocate a timeslot for uplink transmission from the endpoint based on the self-determined uplink strength,
wherein the communications network implementing a modified slotted ALOHA protocol includes a plurality of timeslots; and

The endpoint of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to:
determine that the ALOHA message has a length that is greater than a threshold length for a transmission timeslot of assigned Aloha channels;
send a request to a basestation for a redirection to a non-Aloha channel; and
send the message having the length that is greater than a threshold length on the non-Aloha channel.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The endpoint of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to:
determine that the ALOHA message has a length that is greater than a threshold length for a transmission timeslot;
request a pause of messaging responsive to the determination that the ALOHA message has a length that is greater than the threshold length; and
send the ALOHA message during the pause.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The endpoint of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to determine the uplink strength by one of receiving an uplink strength in the message received at the endpoint and deriving the uplink strength from the received downlink strength.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The endpoint of claim 8, wherein the processor is further configured to allocate a timeslot for uplink transmission by one of locating the determined uplink strength on a lookup table to identify the timeslot for uplink transmission and dividing the determined uplink strength by a number of timeslots to identify the timeslot for uplink transmission.
