## Abstract

Particular embodiments described herein provide for a network element that can be configured to receive a request message, wherein the request message includes a read trigger, an indicator selector, and a completion trigger, determine an indicator that relates to the indicator selector, and perform an action when the read trigger is activated.

## Claims

### Claim 1

At least one non-transitory machine readable medium comprising one or more instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
receive a request message from a network manager, wherein the request message was communicated over a network that includes a plurality of switches and includes a read trigger, an indicator selector, and a completion trigger;
determine at least one indicator that relates to the indicator selector; and
perform an action when the read trigger is activated.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 1, further comprising one or more instructions that when executed by the at least one processor, further cause the at least one processor to:
read a status of the indicator that relates to the indicator selector; and
store the status in a buffer.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 2, wherein the status of the indicator provides data related to a performance of the network.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 2, further comprising one or more instructions that when executed by the at least one processor, further cause the at least one processor to:
communicate at least a portion of the buffer to the network manager when the completion trigger is activated.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the read trigger is a compound expression.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the read trigger is not activated if it is determined that the at least one machine readable medium does not include the indicator that relates to the indicator selector.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the indicator is a performance counter.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The at least one machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the at least one determined indicator is a plurality of performance counters and the plurality of performance counters are a subset of available counters.

### Claim 9

An apparatus comprising:
memory;
an indicator engine; and
at least one processor, wherein the at least one processor is configured to cause the indicator engine to:
receive a request message from a network manager, wherein the request message was communicated over a network that includes a plurality of switches and includes a read trigger, an indicator selector, and a completion trigger;
determine at least one indicator that relates to the indicator selector; perform an action when the read trigger is activated;
read a status of the indicator that relates to the indicator selector; and
store the status in a buffer.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the status of the indicator provides data related to a performance of the network.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the read trigger is a compound expression.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the indicator is a performance counter.

### Claim 13

A method comprising:
receiving a request message, wherein the request message was communicated over a network that includes a plurality of switches and includes a read trigger, an indicator selector, and a completion trigger;
determining at least one indicator that relate to the indicator selector; and
performing an action when the read trigger is activated.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, further comprising:
reading a status of the indicator that relates to the indicator selector; and
storing the status in a buffer.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, further comprising:
communicating at least a portion of the buffer to a network manager when the completion trigger is activated.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the read trigger is a compound expression.

### Claim 17 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the read trigger is not activated if it is determined that the at least one machine readable medium does not include the indicator that relates to the indicator selector.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the indicator is a performance counter.

### Claim 19

A system for process management, the system comprising:
memory;
one or more processors; and
an indicator engine configured to:
receive a request message, wherein the request message was communicated over a network that includes a plurality of switches and includes a read trigger, an indicator selector, and a completion trigger;
determine one or more indicators that relate to the indicator selector; and
perform an action when the read trigger is activated.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The system of claim 19, wherein the indicator engine is further configured to:
read a status of the indicator one or more indicators that relates to the indicator selector; and
store the status in a buffer.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The system of claim 20, wherein the status of the one or more indicators provides data related to a performance of a network.

### Claim 22 (depends on 20)

The system of claim 20, wherein the indicator engine is further configured to:
communicate at least a portion of the buffer to a network manager when the completion trigger is activated.

### Claim 23 (depends on 19)

The system of claim 19, wherein the read trigger is a compound expression.

### Claim 24 (depends on 19)

The system of claim 19, wherein the read trigger is not activated if it is determined that the at least one machine readable medium does not include the one or more indicators that relate to the indicator selector.

### Claim 25 (depends on 19)

The system of claim 19, wherein the one or more indicators are a performance counter.
