## Abstract

Selectively lockable holding arrangements for a surgical access assembly are disclosed. One holding arrangement includes a body portion, an engagement barrel and a retaining member configured as a hook at a distal end of the body portion. The engagement barrel is position on a proximal end of the body portion and is configured to be selectively rotated about the body portion when operatively connected to a surgical holding arrangement. A rotation brake is mounted on the body section. The rotation brake is selectively operable to lock the engagement barrel against rotation.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A selectively lockable holding assembly for a surgical access assembly, comprising:
a body portion;
an engagement barrel;
a retaining member at a distal end of the body portion;
wherein the engagement barrel is positioned on a proximal end of the body portion and configured to be selectively rotated about the body portion; and
a rotation brake mounted on the body portion, wherein the rotation brake is selectively operable to lock the engagement barrel against rotation with respect to the body portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The holding assembly of claim 1, wherein the rotation brake comprises a shaped ferrule fixedly connected to the body portion and a selectively movable slider element that is disposed over the shaped ferrule, but not over the engagement barrel when the rotation brake is in an unlocked position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The holding assembly of claim 2, wherein the shaped ferrule is affixed to the body portion, distal of the engagement barrel.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The holding assembly of claim 2, wherein the slider element further comprises a channel extending therethrough and wherein the channel is shaped to be complementary to the shaped ferrule such that the slider element is keyed to the shaped ferrule.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The holding assembly of claim 4, wherein the shaped ferrule has a hex cross-sectional shape.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The holding assembly of claim 4, wherein the shaped ferrule includes one or more splines and wherein the channel of the slider element engages the splines.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The holding assembly of claim 2, wherein the shaped ferrule has a distal section and a proximal section, wherein an outside diameter of the distal section is larger than an outside diameter of the proximal section and a lip is positioned between the distal section and proximal section.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The holding assembly of claim 7, wherein a channel formed through the slider element further comprises one or more stoppers that are configured to contact the lip to prevent a distal end of the slider element from sliding past a distal edge of the shaped ferrule.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The holding assembly of claim 7, wherein the engagement barrel includes an outside diameter that that generally corresponds to the outside diameter of the distal section of the shaped ferrule.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The holding assembly of claim 9, wherein the engagement barrel further comprises an outside surface that defines textured section at the distal end of the engagement barrel, wherein the slider element is configured to slide over the textured section and frictionally engages the textured section of the engagement barrel, while being engaged with the shaped ferrule to prevent the engagement barrel from rotating.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The holding assembly of claim 1, wherein the rotation brake comprises an elongated ferrule fixedly connected to the body portion and a selectively movable slider element that is disposed over at least a portion of the elongated ferrule and is positively engaged with a portion of the engagement barrel when the rotation brake is in an unlocked position.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The holding assembly of claim 11, wherein the engagement barrel further comprises a shaped distal section.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The holding assembly of claim 12, wherein the slider element further comprises a channel extending therethrough and wherein the channel is shaped to be complementary to the shaped distal section of the engagement barrel such that the slider element is keyed to the shaped distal section of the engagement barrel.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The holding assembly of claim 13, wherein the shaped distal section has a hex cross-sectional shape.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The holding assembly of claim 13, wherein the elongated ferrule has a distal section and a proximal section, wherein an outside surface of the distal section defines a textured section, wherein the slider element is configured to slide over the textured section and frictionally engages the textured section of the elongated ferrule, while being engaged with the shaped distal section of the engagement barrel to prevent the engagement barrel from rotating.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The holding assembly of claim 11, wherein a channel is formed through the slider element further comprises one or more stoppers that are configured to contact a distal edge of the engagement barrel to prevent a proximal end of the slider element from sliding past a proximal edge of a shaped distal section of the engagement barrel.

### Claim 17 (depends on 1)

The holding assembly of claim 1, further comprising a Sugita adapter mounted to the engagement barrel.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The holding assembly of claim 17, wherein the Sugita adapter further comprises a body portion and a mounting area, wherein the mounting area further comprises a mounting sleeve.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The holding assembly of claim 18, wherein the mounting sleeve further comprises a mounting channel therethrough that receives the engagement barrel.

### Claim 20 (depends on 1)

The holding assembly of claim 1, further comprising a Budde adapter mounted to the engagement barrel.

### Claim 21 (depends on 20)

The holding assembly of claim 20, wherein the Budde adapter includes a body portion formed as a mounting sleeve and including a mounting channel therethrough that receives the engagement barrel.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The holding assembly of claim 21, further comprising a mounting area that includes a support groove, wherein the support groove does not extend through the mounting area and receives a support shaft therein.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The holding assembly of claim 22, wherein the support shaft is defined by a first end and second end and wherein the first end is formed with at least one support ring and an annular recess, wherein the support ring frictionally engages sidewalls of the support groove to secure the support shaft to the Budde adapter.
