Abstract
An electrophoretic display including a passive matrix formed of row and column electrodes with an electrophoretic medium including two types of differently-colored charged particles disposed between the row and column electrodes. When the device is driven to a first color state by providing a voltage differential of 15V, the color state is stable for voltage differentials between 15V and −5V. The display switches to the second color state when a voltage differential of −15V is provided.
Claims18
An electrophoretic display comprising:
- a) a plurality of pixels, each pixel
- (i) having a viewing side and a non-viewing side, and
- (ii) being disposed between a top electrode extending in a first direction and a bottom electrode extending in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction;
- and
- b) an electrophoretic fluid comprising two types of charged pigment particles disposed between the top and bottom electrodes, the two types of charged pigment particles
- (i) having opposite charge polarities, and
- (ii) having different colors;
- c) a first voltage source coupled to the top electrode;
- d) a second voltage source coupled to the bottom electrode;
- wherein when the plurality of pixels are set to a first color by providing a voltage differential of +15V between the top and bottom electrodes, the plurality of pixels maintain the first color when a voltage differential of +15V to −5V is provided between the top and bottom electrodes, and
- wherein when the plurality of pixels are set to the first color by providing a voltage differential of +15V between the top and bottom electrodes, the plurality of pixels change to a second color when a voltage differential of −15V is provided between the top and bottom electrodes.
