A process of forming a resveratrol-based flame retardant small molecule with a phosphonate/phosphinate molecule that includes a chloride group and a terminal functional group.

A resveratrol-based flame retardant compound having the following structural formula:
- wherein R corresponds to an alkyl group;
- and
- wherein X includes a terminal functional group selected from the group consisting of:
- an allyl group;
- an epoxide group;
- an ethylene carbonate group;
- an amine group;
- and a carboxyl group.
