Smart alerts in a tracking device environment

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions executable by a processor, the instructions comprising:

• instructions for receiving, at a central tracking system, a location of a mobile device of a user, the mobile device configured to provide a location of the mobile device to the central tracking system in response to receiving a communication from a tracking device;
• responsive to determining that the mobile device has remained at the location for a threshold amount of time, instructions for establishing, by the central tracking system, a geographic boundary around the location, the geographic boundary associated with the tracking device;
• instructions for receiving, at the central tracking system, a new location of the mobile device, the new location located outside of the geographic boundary;
• instructions for sending, to the mobile device, a configuration instruction to configure the mobile device to scan for the tracking device for an interval of time;
• responsive to the mobile device detecting the tracking device within the interval of time, instructions for storing, at the central tracking system, information indicating that the user is in possession of the tracking device;
• and
• responsive to not detecting the tracking device during the interval of time, instructions for sending an indication to the mobile device indicating that the user has left the tracking device behind.

A computer system comprising:

• a computer processor;
• and
• a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storage instructions that when executed by the computer processor perform actions comprising:
• receive, at a central tracking system, a location of a mobile device of a user, the mobile device configured to provide a location of the mobile device to the central tracking system in response to receiving a communication from a tracking device;
• responsive to determining that the mobile device has remained at the location for a threshold amount of time, establish, by the central tracking system, a geographic boundary around the location, the geographic boundary associated with the tracking device;
• receive, at the central tracking system, a new location of the mobile device, the new location located outside of the geographic boundary;
• send, to the mobile device, a configuration instruction to configure the mobile device to scan for the tracking device for an interval of time;
• responsive to the mobile device detecting the tracking device within the interval of time, store, at the central tracking system, information indicating that the user is in possession of the tracking device;
• and
• responsive to not detecting the tracking device during the interval of time, send an indication to the mobile device indicating that the user has left the tracking device behind.
