Abstract
A near eye display device includes a sparse array of intensity modulated light beam emission and steering points disposed on a transparent lens, capable of forming a wide field of view composite image directly on the retina with variable degrees of apparent depth controlled by an image forming timing signal. The active regions of the beam emission and steering elements is configured so as not to generate optical aberrations of transmitted ambient light that is apparent to the eye. The display may be applied to small form factor stereoscopic head worn display systems and used in conjunction with Augmented Reality software applications.
Claims21
A display device comprising:
- a substantially transparent light beam emitting layer configured to be positioned between a user's eye and an observed scene at an unfocusable eye relief distance, the light beam emitting layer including an array of designated emission points with an interpoint spacing less than a minimum design pupil diameter and configured to emit at least one intensity modulated collimated light beam from each designated emission point;
- and
- at least one biaxial light beam steering layer configured to be disposed between the light beam emitting layer and the user's eye;
- wherein:
- the at least one biaxial light beam steering layer is configured to scan each beam to form a projected image tile that contributes to a portion of a retinal image;
- the at least one biaxial light beam steering layer is configured to direct a center point of the projected image tile toward a center point of an eye pupil area;
- an angular envelope of a projected image tile is configured to occupy a unique angular segment of a pupil field of view (FOV) such that a composite image formed on a retina substantially fills the pupil FOV;
- the light beam emitting layer and the at least one biaxial light beam steering layer for each designated emission point having an area substantially smaller than a design eye pupil area;
- and
- the display device further includes an image generating element that controls light beam intensity modulation and angular scanning action at each designated emission point in response to temporally synchronized light beam intensity modulation and scan signals supplied to the light beam emitting layer and the at least one biaxial light beam steering layer.
