Abstract
An adaptive filter system and a method for controlling the adaptive filter system are described herein. The system can includes one or more filters to attenuate incoming light. The one or more filters can be moved by one or more actuators. The method can capture image data from an imaging device through the one or more filters. Information can be determined from the captured image data. The one or more filters can be moved to a position for capturing image data based on the information.
Claims19
An adaptive filter system comprising:
- a graduated neutral density filter adapted to attenuate incoming light captured by an imaging device, the graduated neutral density filter having a range of optical densities that varies along an axis;
- at least one actuator coupled to the graduated neutral density filter and adapted to move the graduated neutral density filter between a range of positions for attenuating the incoming light captured by the imaging device;
- and
- a controller configured to cause the at least one actuator to move the graduated neutral density filter along the axis between a first position and a second position responsive, at least in part, to an amount of light incident on the imaging device, wherein the axis is different from an optical axis of the imaging device,
- wherein the incoming light is attenuated by at least a first optical density at the first position and by at least a second optical density at the second position, and
- wherein the first optical density is greater from the second optical density.
A method comprising:
- capturing, by an imaging device, image data through a graduated neutral density filter having a range of optical densities that varies along an axis;
- determining information from the captured image data, the information comprising an amount of light incident on the imaging device;
- and
- controlling at least one actuator to move the graduated neutral density filter along the axis between a first position and a second position responsive, at least in part, the amount of light incident on the imaging device, wherein the axis is different from an optical axis of the imaging device,
- wherein the incoming light is attenuated by at least a first optical density at the first position and by at least a second optical density at the second position, and
- wherein the first optical density is greater from the second optical density.
