Abstract
A device for measuring blind holes formed through a bone includes (a) a first elongated rod including a shaft extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the distal end including an increased diameter abutment extending radially outward therefrom, the abutment including a proximal surface formed to contact a portion of the bone adjacent a distal opening of the blind hole to assume a locked configuration with the bone and (b) a second elongated rod extending from a proximal end to a distal end along a longitudinal axis.
Claims11
A method for measuring a depth of a blind hole formed through a bone, comprising:
- inserting a first elongated rod into a proximal opening leading into the blind hole and out of a distal opening of the blind hole such that an abutment located at a distal end of the first rod and having an increased cross-section relative thereto is positioned distally of the distal opening, the abutment having a first portion extending transversely off the first rod in a first direction and a second portion extending transversely off the first rod in a second direction;
- slidably moving a second elongated rod relative to the first rod until a distal end of the second elongated rod engages the first portion of the abutment so that the distal end of the second elongated rod is prevented from moving distally therepast, the abutment and the distal end of the second rod being shaped and sized so that a combined diameter of the abutment and the distal end of the second rod is greater than a diameter of the distal opening;
- retracting the first rod proximally until the second portion of the abutment is seated against a portion of an outer surface of the bone adjacent to the distal opening;
- and
- advancing a housing encasing a proximal length of the first and second rods distally until a distal end of the housing contacts the proximal opening so that the housing aligns with a marking corresponding to a depth of the blind hole.
A method for measuring the depth of a blind hole formed through a bone, comprising:

- slidably moving a second elongated rod relative to the first rod until a cylindrical insert at a distal end of the second elongated rod engages the first portion of the abutment so that the cylindrical insert is prevented from moving distally therepast, the abutment and the distal end of the second rod being sized and shaped so that a combined diameter of the abutment and the distal end of the second rod is greater than a diameter of the distal opening, the second elongated rod extending from a proximal end to the distal end along a central longitudinal axis and the cylindrical insert having a diameter increased relative to a diameter of a proximal portion of the second elongated rod, the cylindrical insert including a wedge at the distal end of the second elongated rod, the insert having a groove extending therethrough, the groove being sized and shaped to slidably receive the first rod therethrough;
- retracting the first rod proximally until the second portion of the abutment is seated against a portion of an outer surface of the bone adjacent to the distal opening;
- and
- advancing a cylindrical housing encasing a proximal length of the first and second rods therein distally until a distal end of the housing contacts the proximal opening so that the housing aligns with a marking corresponding to a depth of the blind hole.
