Abstract
A transperineal biopsy guide including a guide member and a displacement member supported by the guide member. The guide member may be configured to operably couple with the transrectal probe and may include a distal end, a proximal end opposite the distal end, and a length extending along a longitudinal axis between the distal and proximal ends. The displacement member may be configured to support the access needle and displace the access needle along at least a portion of the length of the guide member between the distal and proximal ends. The access needle may extend into the subcutaneous tissue when the access needle is displaced to the distal end.
Claims19
A biopsy guide configured to couple to a shaft of a transrectal probe and for use in guiding an access needle in a transperineal prostate biopsy procedure, the access needle configured to perforate and be positioned within subcutaneous tissue of a perineum of a patient for subsequent insertion of a biopsy needle through the access needle and into a prostate of the patient, the biopsy guide comprising:
- an upper mount comprising a guide member and a displacement member, the guide member and the displacement member each being single piece structures, the displacement member configured to releasably couple to and slide on the guide member, the guide member comprising a longitudinal axis extending between a distal end and a proximal end, a base platform, a pair of extension members extending from the base platform, and a pair of guide rails coupled, respectively, to the pair of extension members and extending distally beyond the base platform, the displacement member comprising at least one needle receiving port and a pair of laterally extending surfaces configured to frictionally engage and slide on the pair of guide rails, each of the pair of guide rails including a planar top surface, a flange at a distal termination thereof, and a surface protrusion thereon, the planar top surfaces of the pair of guide rails configured to provide planar sliding contact with the pair of laterally extending surfaces of the displacement member, displacement member configured to slide up to the flanges and be secured in a distal position via the surface protrusions, the at least one needle receiving port configured to receive the access needle there through such that the access needle is displaceable along the longitudinal axis via sliding of the displacement member on the guide member;
- and
- a lower mount coupled to or configured to couple to the guide member of the upper mount, the lower mount comprising an adjustable fastener configured to releasably couple to the shaft of the transrectal probe.
- an upper mount comprising a guide member and a displacement member, the guide member and the displacement member each being single piece structures, the displacement member configured to translate relative to the guide member via planar sliding contact there between, the guide member comprising a longitudinal axis extending between a distal end and a proximal end, a base platform, a pair of extension members extending from the base platform, and a pair of guide rails coupled, respectively, to the pair of extension members and extending distally beyond the base platform, each of the pair of guide rails comprising a planar top surface, a flange at a distal termination thereof, and a surface protrusion thereon to secure the displacement member in a distal position, the displacement member comprising a plurality of needle receiving ports aligned vertically relative to each other and a pair of wings extending laterally from the plurality of needle receiving ports, the pair of wings configured to frictionally engage and slide in planar contact with the planar top surfaces of the pair of guide rails up to the flanges such that a first portion of the plurality of needle receiving ports are aligned above a plane defined by the pair of guide rails and such that a second portion of the plurality of needle receiving ports are aligned below the plane, the plurality of needle receiving ports configured to receive the access needle there through such that the access needle is displaceable along the longitudinal axis via the planar sliding contact between the displacement member and the guide member;
- and
- a lower mount coupled to or configured to couple to the guide member of the upper mount, the lower mount comprising an adjustable fastener configured to releasably couple to the shaft of the transrectal probe.
- an upper mount comprising a guide member and a displacement member, the displacement member configured to releasably couple to and slide on the guide member, the guide member being a monolithic structure and comprising a longitudinal axis extending between a distal end and a proximal end, a base platform, a pair of extension members spaced apart from each other and extending upwards from the base platform, a pair of guide rails coupled, respectively, to the pair of extension members, and a channel formed between the pair of guide rails and the pair of extension members, each of the pair of guide rails comprising a planar top surface, a flange at a distal termination thereof, and a surface protrusion thereon to secure the displacement member in a distal position,
- the displacement member being a monolithic structure and comprising a plurality of needle receiving ports and a pair of laterally extending surfaces configured to frictionally engage and slide in planar sliding contact with the planar top surfaces of the pair of guide rails within the channel and up to the flanges, the plurality of needle receiving ports configured to receive the access needle there through such that the access needle is displaceable along the longitudinal axis via sliding of the displacement member on the guide member;
- and
- a lower mount coupled to or configured to couple to the guide member of the upper mount.
