Abstract
The present invention relates to a new method for increasing drought resistance of a plant. The method encompasses the impairment of the expression of a gene or genes in said plant. In comparison to a plant not manipulated to impair the expression of said gene(s), the plants display improved drought resistance. Also provided are plants and plant products that can be obtained by the method according to the invention.
Claims8
A Solanum lycopersicum, Brassica rapa, or Oryza sativa plant, plant cell, or plant product, comprising a mutation introduced in an endogenous gene encoding a functional pectinesterase protein comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO:
- 4, 6, 8, or 10 resulting in an absence of expression of said functional pectinesterase protein, wherein the plant, plant cell, or plant product exhibits improved drought resistance.
